Songs of Experience is excellent. “The Little Things That Give You Away” would be as well received as the rest of their classics if it came out in their heyday as a band.
Her extended body of work is pretty great, so she must add something. Had no idea she played on those Clairo songs or that Brandon Flowers track.
You're sounding a bit like the titular "Man From The Magazine" and she already has a response to that:
Man from the music shop, I drove too far
For you to hand me that starter guitar
"Hey girl, why don't you play a few bars?"
Oh, what's left to prove?
By the same token, it's wild to me that MGMT's biggest solo Hot 100 single is "Kids" at #99! That song and "Electric Feel" were inescapable for the year-and-change after their release. There's a whole wormhole of songs you'd think were bigger than they are, but MGMT's 2008 run stands at the very height of it.
It should be explicitly called out that the Mayer-aping guitar solo in "Dear John" is an amazing diss. She tried to do the same diss-you-in-your-own-musical-style thing to Calvin Harris in "Dancing With Our Hands Tied", but no one gave her as much credit because Harris' musical aesthetic is basically anonymous at this point.
They released the demo to "Nothing's Gonna Happen" about a year ago on DSPs and it was excellent. Very excited for the proper follow-up to 'If I Was', which is highly underrated.
Honestly, I thought this was funny when I read the headline but this is a really awful scam. That money was for folks whose businesses were closing in the pandemic.
“But “The Cure” also has Nas saying this: “Still going deeper like I grew a new inch on my dick.” And maybe people don’t think think Nas is as cool as Tupac and Biggie because Nas will never stop saying stuff like that.”
I mean... Biggie rapped “You looked so fine, I’d suck on your daddy’s d***” on his magnum opus debut. Tupac’s got plenty of cringe lines in his discography. If anything, your counterexample reinforces Nas’ underlying point that his longevity has removed his ability to get away with lyrics like that.
I think he's waiting until it won't be received as a response to Trump. Guy cares about his art too much to have it be reduced to some bullshit narrative.
