I must be the only one enjoying the Balvin/Lipa collaboration! Such a good vibe to that one, and that hook just worms its way into my head. Also, can we discuss this Levitating remix about to drop!? Getting features from Missy Elliott AND Madonna is huge. Not sure if it will translate to it becoming another hit for her (it should!) but that’s an incredible get for Dua Lipa. Beyond excited for that to drop in a couple of weeks.
Speak Now is my favorite, too. Only things I’d change would be Lover being lower and Reputation being slightly higher (Getaway Car onward, Reputation is excellent) 3. Red 4. Folklore 5. Fearless 6. Reputation 7. Lover 8. Taylor Swift
Thanks for responding! I’ve never claimed to not be an idiot, so won’t argue that point. Just consider, please, what inspires you to rush to a Taylor Swift post just to dismiss the project outright instead of engaging it in a thoughtful way. And look, I’m willing to concede you believe it has everything to do with her “Pop Star” status instead of her gender, but even then you offer nothing constructive in your criticism. Alright, enough rambling. Have a good weekend!
Hollywood’s Bleeding, After Hours, and Chromatica all feel like sure things when it comes to being nominated. Maybe Fine Line, too? Fiona would be awesome but I think she’ll be left to the Alternative catergory.
As someone that loved the sprawl of Speak Now and Red, an hour-plus with Taylor Swift is more than welcome.
Your sexism is showing if you like the National but dismiss this from the jump.
I get needing a break from the album’s atmosphere around the august mark, but “this is me trying,” “illicit affairs,” and “invisible string” are all incredible. And not trying to jump into hyperbole but “betty” might be a top 10 Taylor Swift song. So hang in there, everyone! There’s gold on the other side.
When I first heard those lyrics I wasn’t looking at them so I definitely heard that as “mouth-fuck you forever” and I was like “Taylor really went there!” The actual lyric is much more on brand.
Plus Dua, Jessie, Carly, and Kylie is coming! They said “let the gays have rights!”
I never knew I needed Taylor Swift lyrics and melodies over National instrumentals but this is my favorite thing she’s done on first listen. This is just a wonderful album. Her lyrics are the best since Red at least, maybe Speak Now.
Saw Capital Cities live when that song blew up and they were fun live! No knock on that one. But yeah the T Swift one is one of my favorite songs of hers.
I’m imagining 16 “Safe & Sound”’s mixed with “Big Red Machine” and I’ve never been more excited for a Taylor Swift album.
Absolutely could hear Rihanna on tracks like Tights on My Boat and Texas Man. The choruses of both in particular.
Loving the album. Their melodies are as sharp as ever. The two Julia Michaels co-writes are probably my favorite right now - “Texas Man” and “Tights on My Boat.” Whole album is solid front to back.
This could have fit nicely on Songs For You and that’s the highest compliment. A top 5 album of last year easily. Hope she’s happier working outside the major label machine
Wasn’t sure what direction to go in with my vote; do I go with one of my most played songs from the summer so far? (“Is It True”, “The Kill”) My favorite songs of the year? (Kerosene!) Big name pop collaborations? (Savage, Rain On Me) I didn’t pick any of those. And now that I think about it, the song I picked wasn’t even right. The song of the summer is hands down “Lose Your Job (Remix)”i
He might just be my favorite musician of the past 10 years. Can’t think of anything Jaar’s put his name to that I haven’t liked. It blows my mind how intricate and detailed all his music is, yet there’s a deliberate quality to how he distributes and places these sounds. “Musical genius” gets thrown around more than it should, but it 100% fits Nicolas Jaar.
“Vessel” by Big Black Delta is one of the standouts for the week. “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals too.
Wasted will be remembered as the best song on the album when the dust settles if my prediction is right! That’s an album that will only get better with time.
This is what we get for paying Prism dust! “Roulette,” among others, is the truth. Now she’s out here trying to conquer Hot AC radio. Hope she sees success from this but the potential is there for so much more.
“Wasted” is the one. When that piano came in, phew! This feels much more jammy and casual than their past albums to me; I know that’s always been in their DNA it just seems to stand out more on this one. Good stuff all around.
Reading that linked article was wild. Guess I have to watch the movie to find out who won Paddy’s Pub.
That’s my favorite from his debut. “Post Humorous” just came out and I really am enjoying that one, although reading others’ reactions I think I’m in the minority on that one.
Someone about the darker lyrical content and happier sound feels very “in” with the Tik Tok generation (am I saying any of this correctly)? There’s that Melanie Martinez song from 2015 that started to blow up, “Play Date.” Does a lot of the same things “Supalonely” does so well. And I feel Lily Allen’s influence on both for sure.
They don’t get brought up nearly enough when we talk about the best American bands. Seriously one of the all-time greats. Tennessee Fire - Z was such a run. Not to mention Okonokos being one of my favorite live albums.
Thank you! Literally can’t stop listening to that one. But the whole album is her masterpiece and is firmly in my top 5 of the year (might be #1)
Please tell me there’s an (I’m most likely paraphrasing) “I’ve Heard It” T-Shirt. Will buy regardless, but that would be #1 on my wish-list. A “Respect Motherfucking Craft“ T would is a close second.
Can never go wrong with Beyoncé at #1. That Lianne La Havas “Weird Fishes” cover is absolutely stunning and would have a place in my top 5. “My Own Version of You” would be included, too. What a week for new music. Lots of good stuff to absorb.
The album is perfect. I’d be okay with “The Kill” getting placement, too! Those last two tracks... god damn.
STTY’s best moments are just as good as DAG’s best, but that debut is much more consistent. This one, though, is by far their best. Pretty awesome both Haim and Jessie Ware released their best albums on the same day.
I saw the title in Apple Music before playing and thought “hope this is a Radiohead cover!” and was beyond thrilled. She did it with this one. Hopefully this puts more respect on her name because LLV is the truth.
If we’re allowing Doja Cat to stay, can we reinstate Azealia Banks?
Hard to leave off Jason and Nothing at All, but there’s no wrong answer when it comes to a Perfume Genius top 10. Love every song listed here, and the ones every commenter has listed. Can’t think of a more perfect 10 year arc for an artist.
Time and So We Won’t Forget have been getting a lot of play over here - as has that Texas Sun EP. This is another winner. I feel like this is an going to be an album I’ll have no problem putting on repeat. Love how clean everything sounds, but it still sticks. Not sure if that makes sense but that’s the best way I can describe it.
It was funny to me when this and “Ride It” by Regard starting to pop off and then I looked and found that Roses was an older song and “Ride It” was a remix of a Jay Sean track. Really looking forward to some producer unearthing an Iyaz deep cut for a future top 10.
Maybe that’s the album that was originally gonna get AOTW. The singles lead me to believe it’s going to be her best yet.
People really slept on his “Move That Dope” verse, didn’t they?
Yeah these guys are just fucking ridiculous haha. In the best way of course. How does everything they do sound so badass? Still picking my jaw off the floor after that 2 Chainz cut
*Their Was too excited to care about grammar!
