My exact words were, "He was an idiot," and, "I don't sympathize with him. I just think he's innocent of murder."
If you're gonna hijack the top comment, don't do it with lies.
I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but here we go.
Just so we're clear: 1) I love rap, and 2) this is good legislation. You shouldn't be able to use song lyrics as evidence against someone. That's just wrong, and that it's solely/mainly been used against rappers is probably racist.
That said, I'm sorry, but the Johnny Cash/David Byrne comparison is just nonsense. Are we really all going to sit here and pretend that rap as a genre doesn't have a huge problem/strong association with real-life violence? Are there not at least a few rappers any of us could name off the tops of our heads with violent lyrics who actually have, in all likelihood, murdered other people or had them murdered?
Think about how shocked you'd be if it turned out David Byrne had put a hit out on someone, or if FKA twigs's tour bus was shot at in a drive-by. Very shocked. Now think about how shocked you'd be if Birdman were charged with murder. Maybe shocked still, but much less shocked.
Am I making sense here?
Tom doesn’t care. At least Stereogum has posted two articles about DaBaby’s rabid homophobia as opposed to the zero articles about Jay Electronica’s rabid antisemitism.
I've always liked Bill Callahan-era Bill Callahan, but I only just started listening to Smog after reading that anniversary article on Apocalypse.
Anyone have any Smog recommendations that aren't Knock Knock or Dongs of Sevotion? Thanks!
He didn't just sample Farrakhan, ding-dong.
He went on a whole anti-Semitic Twitter rant after the Nick Cannon/Professor Griff fiasco about how the Jews are the Synagogue of Satan, black people are the real Jews, the Jews ran the Atlantic slave-trade, etc.
Side note: How does it feel to be the worst regular on this site?
It's nice to know you can sample Louis Farrakhan on your album and be a rabid anti-Semite and still get a Grammy nomination, Best New Music at the Other Site, and a positive Premature Evaluation from Stereogum without anyone in the music press or commentariat saying absolutely anything at all.
"...other than a few tankies..."
Ilhan Omar tweeted about China last month. I dare you to go scroll through the replies.

Good to know I wasn't the only one who straight-up did not get Black Origami when it came out.
Haven't listened to it since 2017. What made it click for you?
Van Morrison: "They own the media."
Music journalists: Does...does he mean Jews?
Jay Electronica: "Jews own the media."
