Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

The new Frank Ocean album is finally here sort of! To be honest, I haven’t listened to Endless OST yet because I was waiting for isolated audio files to put on my phone. I will listen to it this weekend while I’ll apparently be refreshing Apple Music until the real album drops. This whole rollout has been a blast. At least we can listen with our headphones for now?

In a different year, with a different GOP candidate, I might have agreed, or at least been able to see where he’s coming from. But for me personally, Neoliberal Imperialist Oligarch vs Literally A Fascist is a pretty easy choice.

The capacity that humanity has to believe things that are clearly not grounded in reality is somehow simultaneously our most endearing and our most terrifying tendency.

I think I speak on behalf of everyone that we’re all surprised you’ve given us as much as you have in the past few weeks. The fact you’ve done them, as far as I can tell, all by yourself and without a team of researchers makes it all the more impressive.

Take your time Mikey Nels! Maintaining the quality of the work is what’s most important, not quantity.

As for the Apple Music notes, I know I too come across as anti-AM. I think the reason I, and maybe you too, get so heated on the topic is because we all love music so much and are very critical of outside entities manipulating its purity.

Again, Thank You Mikey Nels.

Yikes, tough crowd. I’ll admit my substance-free comments don’t really add to the conversation. Just my gut reaction when I see that a celebrity’s tacky tweets from five years ago are now subject of conversation and headlines. Oh well. I will now show myself the door of this comment thread.

As someone who hates caramel lattes but likes the D, you don’t speak for all queer ppl.

As lighthearted as he’s trying to come across, his jokes are rooted in homophobic attitudes that allow cis, straight people to ridicule and trivialize queer lives, while literally people are dying because they are queer or trans, while literally people are losing their jobs in places because they are queer or trans, while literally people are being denied housing because they are queer or trans, while literally people have lost their jobs because they are queer or trans, and while literally children have been disowned by their families and forced to live on the streets in many cases having to do sex work in order to survive just because they are queer or trans. Just because your lived experience has granted you the privilege that you can choose to overlook the underlying homophobia/racism in what he said, doesn’t mean that the homophobia/racism wasn’t there in the first place.

Hi guys, thanks for reading!

Just wanted to say a few things here at the top of the comments.

First off, I want to thank you all for the enthusiastic and thoughtful comments on this column week after week since it kicked off six weeks ago. I’m truly humbled by them.

Second, I’m not gonna do a column next week, so the next one might not be till the 26th, or even the first week of September. I’m not sure. I love writing this but it’s not possible to do it at the level I want to do it on a weekly basis, so I gotta pace myself a little bit. I apologize. It’s still a regular feature, just not a weekly one, which was never the intention in the first place. I just find a lot of stuff to write about every week, so I’ve been pushing myself to do a column every week. Maybe it’ll be every other week or something. I dunno. It’ll still be a lot.

Third, this is the second week in a row I went in a little bit on Apple Music, and I just want to clarify that it’s not intentional. This time, it was actually an accident. I started writing about something else, but kept finding myself saying, “But let me back up a step…” and by the time I finally got to where I needed to start, I was here. I don’t have anything against Apple; I have friends who work at Apple. They’re cool people and I never hear them complain about their jobs. Apple makes great products and they employ talented people. It can just be hard talking about the business of music without talking about Apple, because Apple is so involved in so many aspects of the business of music. But I’ve got plenty of problems with Samsung and Spotify and Youtube and the RIAA and the labels and everybody else, too. I also have a ton of respect for the people at those organizations, too.

I guess that’s it. Thanks again for reading. You guys are the best.

Radiohead copycats sorta. They did it for their Live From a Moon Shaped Pool and I actually thought it was a really cool event. I’ll have to make a game-time decision again if this is worth making the drive.

You just insinuated that a gay man has no right to an opinion and should shut up. You might believe you’re our lady of perpetual virtue while in fact you are nothing but a hypocrite. Your allergy to other people’s opinions (even the people who you claim to support), your conviction that you are superior to everyone else, and your insultingly condescending tone make you sound the worst human being.

Are you telling me that’s not Katy Perry in that picture? I should really start following this week in pop.
