Listened to it all day yesterday, and I was kinda surprised that I wasn’t blown away by it. Right now, I hear an accomplished debut of a real talent but I’m not head over heels for it like so many are. I feel like I will listen to 2-3 songs a bunch, but the full album blends together in a way that fades a bit into the background. I didn’t hear *all those* moments that really hook you in that were mentioned in the AOTYSF writeup. Hoping they reveal themselves after a couple more listens, but sometimes I don’t get the records that get praised for their songwriting specifically (thinking of Courtney Barnett’s 1st, Lucy Dacus’ 1st, Big Thief’s latest especially) so it’s possible I just don’t recognize great songwriting. Highly, highly possible I’m just a simpleton when it comes to great songwriting.

Rock is in a great place right now. The fact that this *isn’t* one of my favorite rock albums of the year so far means we’ve had a lot of really good ones, and there are more coming. Let me know if you think anything in particular will unlock this thing for me – gonna reread the feature and the AOTYSF piece too.
