I am a gal and I liked the movie a lot but also, like other Safdie movies, it stressed me the fuck out lol. I kept internally screaming WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! the entire movie.
"Still think it's a little silly to branch out as a solo artist in 2020 when Paramore is one of the few mainstream "rock" bands that can still sell tickets, but what do I know?"
Nothing. Selling tickets doesn't mean you have to just stay doing the same old shit when you'd rather try something else more fulfilling for a minute.
Meanwhile... the shortlist for potential nominees for the 92nd Oscars...
VISUAL EFFECTS
Ten films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 92nd Academy Awards. The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films online or attend satellite bake-off screenings in January 2020. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
The films, listed in alphabetical order by title, are:
“Alita: Battle Angel”
“Avengers: Endgame”
“Captain Marvel”
“Cats”
If Cynthia Erivo (age 32) wins an Oscar in the next five-six years, she will be the youngest person to be an EGOT in the fasted period of time. Tony Award (2016), Daytime Emmy Award (2017), Grammy Award (2017). The youngest / fastest was Robert Lopez who competed his in 10 years at age 39.
It was a store-front under an office building that had a coffee shop attached to it. I saw Dirty Projectors and [[[[VVRSSNN]]]] there, Trans Am, Animal Collective, Dan Deacon, El Guapo, tons of shit.
After it closed, it was The Passenger (bar) for years.
Most stoked for Fiona Apple, U.S. Girls, Fontaines D.C., Jessie Ware, Caribou, IDLES, Perfume Genius, Moses Sumney, Kali Uchis, Rihanna, Archers of Loaf, and Megan Thee Stallion.
Katy Perry has to be my most loathed pop star (and I love pop music). Swap her out for Wolf Parade.
I can't remember what band it was but some band had Gilbert Godfried and Pauly Shore to make videos advertising their show at Red Rocks a few months ago lol.
This past year was HIGH SCHOOL KID CITY. I have a feeling it was because of The 1975 and King Princess playing, but like... none of the high school kids really bothered me? I ended up talking to some nice kids about music while we were waiting for our phones to charge until they started talking about what AP classes they were taking next year and then I was like "I'm out. I'm old." As someone who also works for a festival, I can see why they'd want kids to have someone older with them though, especially when the fest got canceled and shit got rowdy. Safety issues and making sure that minors have at least some sort of adult with them for liability reasons?
No for sure, I get that. That wasn't really what I was talking about. They're both artists from wealthy white families who are privileged AF. I meant in comparison to each other, I think the SNL play makes a little more sense for Billie than KP (like in terms of popularity, etc).
Exactly. You can not like something, that's fine. But just because you don't like something and you're a MUSIC CRITIC doesn't mean you get to decide it's just not good in general.
I agree that both artists got SNL very fast but I feel like it's slightly more deserved in Billie's case. She has major hits, she's a much bigger artist than King Princess. I mean she's doing Madison Square Garden, Prudential Center, and Barclays in the span of a week. And they're all almost sold out and not until March (that's almost 60,000 tickets). King Princess played two nights Terminal 5 last week (6,000 tickets). I like both artists though.
Caryn Ganz used to be the deputy editor at Rolling Stone and for a while was the Pop Music Editor at NYT (maybe still is? I have no idea, I don't care). I have a problem with people who make a stupid hot-take like the one she made and then back it up with "It's mostly men telling me I'm wrong!" like, I say this as a fellow woman, don't pull that bullshit. You're allowed to not like something but back it up with reasons why. Don't pull the "LOL MEN ARE MAD AT MY COMMENT" card and not give a reason why you think something sucks. There are indeed times when Men Of Twitter come out and attack and say misogynistic shit, for sure, but this isn't that time. Literally the one person who challenged her was Jayson Greene and he was super chill about it.
