man, ever since i heard nilufer yanya's baby luv over a year ago, i've been hungry for anything that used that guitar strumming in less conventional ways in weird pop music. and now my search is over, this is exactly what i've been starving for. thank you based noah
huh, their debut was all the rage back in my primary school in portugal, so when 'everybody' came out it made perfect sense. then i stopped hearing about them and didn't realize until now that they actually got bigger from there. but of course my vision of the world was pretty narrow when i was 9. it still is, but it was back then too
the only track they've reviewed since december was ariana grande's seven rings; i'm hoping they'll pick it back up at some point, i enjoyed reading them and got acquainted with plenty of artists through those reviews
her intensity is undeniable, but just like most late night rock performances the sound came out pretty thin. anything with a little more fuzz just gets chopped out. they'd make kevin shields sound like the fucking smiths
i liked indigo much more than life of pause, just because it sounded way more overdriven and droney (see canyon on fire). admittedly he doesn't shift much but lately hes gone a bit more into dancey 80's indie pop which is right up my alley
but yes, gemini is up there in the dream pop of this decade
i mean it was a good source to learn of new artists, and i always found their recommendations to hit more than miss. the write-ups were usually pretty good too
pretty ambitious list of collaborators / influences. absolutely adore nothing feels natural and have them as my fave punk band in recent times. had them more pegged to the louder, rougher side of punk than to this post-punk vibe, but they've always been somewhere in the middle anyway. greer's voice great and mental as ever, and jaguar can get whatever the fuck sound he wants out of that guitar as usual. beyond stoked to hear what the rest of the record sounds like, and this track as well since my left ear is currently not functioning properly
oh shit, i forgot jenny hval who was preeeeetty great, and also ought who were at the tail end of a long tour and seemed a bit tired but still did their best at pleasing the crowd (i sang more than any other day at the top of my lungs as one does)
thanks to living in a small and populous country i can pretty much see whoever i want to see. only problem is it takes me over an hour of train to get to the big cities which can be a big ask after a work day. still, i think this was the year i saw the most shows
1) serpentwithfeet - great interaction, crowd loved it and his voice sounds even more impressive live
2) julia holter - 6 piece band, incredible tight given how complex the new record sounds. bonus points for how much fun she seemed to be having
3) jenny lewis - greatest hits kind of set, and even tho i'm only really familiar with the voyager it was probably the most fun show i've been to all year
4) haley heynderickx - love her record, and a very likeable and sociable stage presence
other shows i enjoyed: low, hinds, vashti bunyan, grouper, helena deland, jess williamson
sounds a bit overproduced to my ears, but conversations was pretty good so i'll probably give this a couple of spins when it comes out. thanks for the notice jimmy
