Tool knows how to have fun! They really want you to know how much fun they have. They named a song “Hooker With A Penis”! They used audio from a comedian! Tool isn’t even mad, Tool is actually laughing right now.
But I think if you’re comparing a band to King Crimson in 2019 and it’s a band like black midi, people probably know you’re referencing Larks Tongues/Discipline/etc era KC and not In The Court of The Crimson King. I don’t even know what bands you’d compare the latter to. Doom metal maybe?
“some people hearing Talking Heads and some people hearing something as far removed as King Crimson” I’m just gonna grump briefly about these two bands being considered far removed when they both had creative peaks that heavily featured guitar wizard and snappy dresser Adrian Belew. I like the song though
I’m surprised you didn’t go with “Bicycle” for the Dayve Hawk track. That one still holds up, though I could get it not being included since it pretty much morphs into a post punk track halfway through. Also not enough Com Truise.

Look Mr. Wizard, I’m a doctor of journalism, not some conjurer of cheap tricks. And I think Billie Eilish sounds like Portishead put through a Hot Topic themed cheese grater and then sand blasted. And again, that’s not an insult.
The final minute of “Tamarack’s Gold Returns” on Autumn Eternal, the way the little bits of field recordings give the harp interludes on Aria of Vernal Tombs a sense of space and depth, the feeling of continuity of time and place with the rain sounds on the Fluisteraars/Turia split, I’m such a sucker for that sort of thing. Speaking of field recordings, Sublime Frequencies has put out some beautiful sets, my personal favorite is “Leaf Music, Drunks, Distant Drums”.
I submit to the high council that these suggestions are entirely too tame, and that the one true festival God is the TNT Offroad Tour in scenic Florence, South Carolina. Enjoy “Muddin & Music” with headliners Buckcherry and Staind’s Aaron Lewis. Lean into the skid both literally and figuratively this August at the majestic River Neck Acres ATV Park.
I don’t know, the other three came out pretty vehemently condemning Haughm’s bullshit. I’m not quite ready to ditch Ashes Against The Grain yet but I wouldn’t judge you if you did.
When I first discovered Talk Talk a few years ago I was obsessed with “After The Flood”. Pondering the intent of that fountain of raw noise right in between that languid swaying movement. Fuck it still gets me
This is an album about inverse relationships. The gorgeousness of the music vs THAT cover art. The upbeat melodies on “Ghost Ship In A Storm” vs O’Rourke’s grumpy pessimistic lyrics. The way “Movie on the Way Down” slowly contorts from a mellow instrumental into the world’s most misanthropic Broadway musical solo piece. And wolfyfoxtrot is absolutely right, it is hauntingly good at capturing the feeling of relief and disappointment that comes with finding gainful but mindless employment, I had almost the exact same revelation when I started my current job.
He doesn’t need to go on his personal journey of growth while holding public office so yes, really. He represents the state, and considering VA’’s extremely fraught history of race relations his leadership is compromised.
As a lifelong resident of the Old Dominion and a registered Democrat who’s active in local politics let me express my fondest hope that the entire state government leadership is chained to the Jefferson Davis cenotaph and dropped to the bottom of the James River.
I second Marisa Anderson, Cloud Corner is dope. Also I can’t wait to check out the new Sarah Louise, I hadn’t heard of her before the P4k review. Jim O’Rourke’s Bad Timing album is perfect instrumental guitar, and although Mark McGuire leans toward drone his Ideas of Beginnings album is really good guitar centric stuff. Lastly, can’t go wrong with Six Organs of Admittance, and for him I highly recommend starting with For Octavio Paz.
Lubbock huh? “I took three 25s to the side and ended up at Northshore Psychiatric Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. Which is kind of funny in it’s own right, psych ward being in Lubbock, Texas”
At least Browns players get paid. College football is a cartel built on exploiting unpaid labor but I can’t pull myself away from the sheer weirdness of it all
