I love the story about how after they heard Blue Monday, Kraftwerk booked the same studio New Order had used, hoping to find a room full of cutting edge technology. Instead they left in disgust after a few days because of all the jerry-rigged gear that was constantly breaking down, not having realized that the genius of the New Order song probably had less to do with technological breakthroughs than it did with the amount of LSD Bernard Sumner was doing.

For once I wish I’d paid more attention during elvish spelling class
What a great cover, arrangement sounds like something from Astral Weeks.
Half of BBNG (BADBAD? NOTGOOD?) scored their first film last year, Disappearance At Clifton Hill, a neo-noir type thing they're perfect for - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5E0t0n7REo&list=PLH4bwVbDaILGlMHfg-kkkx89LuqvYA7Cn
Love this cover of another great song from that record, Kim Deal with This Mortal Coil - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dvd6o0qqoY
Sheila E is probably the most talented protégée Prince svengalied for, while Apollonia was one of a long, long line of gorgeous but barely talented singers he tried to make happen.
My immediate instinct was to skip past the first 15 minutes to get to the part where someone other than Marc Maron is talking.
Very sad, a real music nerd who put together some amazingly strange and wonderful compilations. Without him we’d never know what Tom Waits covering the Dwarfs’ Heigh Ho from Snow White sounds like - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KISFemeHOC4
Ok I just watched the video to the end, Gwarantine joke and all. I want my upvote back.
I was more surprised by that NPR thing they did https://thehardtimes.net/culture/gwar-asks-nprs-tiny-desk-staff-if-theyre-ready-to-get-their-assholes-ripped-open/
That line-up is looking a bit too much like something Ken Ehrlich would put together in honour of Ken Ehrlich.
One of the greatest live albums ever, I’m always giving it / recommending it to people. There’s that moment at the end of the first song, Use Me, where Bill reacts to the outpouring from the crowd by spontaneously going back into it. Usually that “one more time” thing is pre-planned and a bit corny but you can tell that’s not the case here. That record has so many heartfelt, joyous moments like that.
We are a part of the rhythm staycation.
It's time we all agreed that Coldplay are grating.
They should just start their own band, maybe call it The Riven Section?
I choose to believe that’s a picture of Tom Breihan (seated), Scott Lapatine and Chris DeVille (forgoing his usual trademark canary yellow shirt).
Honestly if more or less the same joke hadn’t already been made half a dozen times already I probably would’ve done the same.
Commenters: wonder when the next fish delivery....ah here we go, ready...aim... https://media.giphy.com/media/3o7TKD5lJbcMRTFFZe/giphy.gif
They’re about as exciting as watching paint dry. Their albums are good for keeping the dust off your turntable. —Tom Waits
It’s basically this Stereolab song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pquZR4uLnVo
Tom Breihan he don’t like it.
Thanks eastside. I only know Fade Into You, playing She Hangs Brightly now, so good.
Wow that video is nothing less than BTS’ very own Citizen Kane which I guess makes Jimmy Fallon no less a talent than Orson Welles.
Er, because it’s wrong?
I love this story - when David Bowie asked Nile Rogers to produce Let’s Dance Nile asked him what he wanted the record to sound like. Bowie showed him a picture of Little Richard wearing a red suit getting out of a red sportscar. “Make it sound like this”.
How about Rural Alberta Advantage doing Levitate Me or something? Both bands share a secret weapon - drummers who are so good they could be doing prog or metal instead of nerdy indie rock.
1. Hey 2. Gouge Away 3. Monkey’s Gone To Heaven 4. No. 13 Baby 5. Tame 6. Wave Of Mutilation 7. Debaser So hard keeping it to just 5 so this monkey’s gone to 7.
Hey Tom why not make it a hat-trick and do a post about Tulsi Gabbard’s favourite Kid Rock songs or something.
Too bad. Tones had some great songs. I’m genuinely surprised Go! didn’t become the 80’s scuzz rock classic it deserved to be. I’d guess David J and Daniel Ash haven’t gotten along for awhile - L&R’s first Toronto show got canceled suddenly so me and some friends hit downtown anyway. We ran into a surly David J on the street who told us the show was cancelled because Ash had imbibed too much the night before.
True but you forgot to mention The Mission, Lotus Flowers and Fields of the Nephilim. Seriously though, is there any reason (beyond Peter Murphy’s ego) that Tones On Tail and Love & Rockets aren’t playing this thing?
Nobody buys acoustic basses either - https://thehardtimes.net/culture/acoustic-bass-industry-begs-violent-femmes-to-buy-another-acoustic-bass/
I hope you’re right. In 2016 the number of Sanders primary voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin who didn’t vote for Clinton in the general was greater then the margin Trump won by in those states.
Too bad. Admittedly it’s just because of his politics but I was pretty happy about that sweet demotion.

Guess I wasn’t too far off. Thanks Scott, that’s righteous of you.
