Disagreed but even still, it’s odd to see an insinuation that his discography is anything less than sterling. I certainly haven’t noticed anyone else becoming disillusioned about Elliott Smith in recent years; the same cannot be said for the article’s cited class of ‘09 all stars.
The hook in How Deep Is Your Love? is a note for note rip of the chorus of "The Thong Song" by Sisqo, as many pointed out upon release. Great song though
What does the claim that this album "holds up" say about either NTMT or "almost ever other 2013 LP"? Like "[album x] was ahead of its time," it's a meaningful-sounding but ultimately vacant phrase, absent any context or elaboration, which indeed is what's missing here. Hence my comment.
No mention of his excellent split with Porches from 2014, which got a lot of press upon release and was my introduction to him. https://seagreenrecords.bandcamp.com/album/porches-mdou-moctar-split
This song is a little bit on the nose lyrically, don't you think? Powerful chorus but I'm not sure there's much substance behind the lyrical clichés... It's pretty much "Born This Way."
