Parranoul is solid but I'm not in love with it, much as I enjoy shoegaze. For Those I Love... just not for me. Not in the sense of I don't like it but more in that the music doesn't solicit the kind of emotional investment that the album clearly wants/needs from the listener.
I've listened to this one a fair amount. It's in the upper reaches of the Honorable Mention tier, but honestly its a like-not-love situation. It really has its moments. But the Kate Bush cosplay can be a little heavy & basically every song could be trimmed by a minute or two IMO.
As Listmas approaches I’ve got ~2 unclaimed spots in my Top 10. If you’re so inclined, give me two recs you think I might’ve slept on. Whether or not they make the cut, I’ll be happy to have something to put on while I grade term papers and try not to hear any more Christmas music than I physically have to.
An absolute legend. The bars. The tunes. His best songs are like a play all on their own. One of the most important American artists of the twentieth century, full stop.
You can acknowledge the severity of the allegations against Manson without minimizing CKs behavior, which was also traumatic for his victims
Kanye, famously unwilling to associate with racists and Nazis https://media-vanityfair-com.cdn.ampproject.org/i/s/media.vanityfair.com/photos/5f2af586f2d929c7c4eb8ca3/master/w_900,c_limit/Trump-Kanye.jpg
- Grammys - Mdou Moctar - shoo-in Would love to live in this universe too
I’m rooting for Lil Nas X dominance in the general categories
Asking Americans to do something just because it would save lives and has been proven to work and just about everybody else does it already... lmao. Some of us we try, sandro, this country is honestly just fucked.
At this point they must be in on the joke with H.E.R. It's like all of the biggest hits of the year, a couple of legacy nods, and H.E.R., who is not really popular, not really a critics darling, and not really a legacy artist, but somehow has convinced the Grammy's that she is the defining musical voice of our times.
Statistically speaking no one knew about her before this year
Also seems like a step in the wrong direction to be like "its okay to rage because there aren't any kids here." Like somehow you can't get trampled or crushed if you're 18+? 7 of the 10 deaths at Astroworld (and who knows how many injuries) were people in their 20s.
She still put out two massively successful albums last year and one the year before that so I don't really see the opportunity cost here.
This isn't as good as it could've been but its nice to have a FUN big pop release with cross-generational appeal to at least mitigate Adele hegemony during the holidays.
Unproductive, sure, but since when is that the point of commenting on Stereogum? I don't see how its dangerous, anymore than taking this kind of mealy-mouthed shit at face value is. No offense but if cody was actually taking his own advice he just wouldn't have posted at all because we literally know nothing. One person coming out with a one-sided account - and like everyone here has noted, taking steps that seem totally out of proportion to what he's admitted - is hardly solid information. It's suspicious af. But the tone of this comment section is (1) extremely credulous and (2) extremely ready to write this off "not great but not serious." Which seems to me like exactly what the person who wrote this would want.
If that's all that is I agree its extremely lame. Not sure what you mean about the image/audience though.
Assuming there's nothing more to it than what he's admitted to, I agree that its not a bad thing to do (though maybe it could be done more discretely?) The kind of scenes that Dogleg broke out of are small and aspire to be real communities and not just buzzband incubators. Its could to show respect for that social fabric. Not to mention his own mental health.
I think we should at least entertain the possibility that the behavior he's alluding to his is more serious than a one-sided and potentially self-serving public statement makes it out to be. Texting and calling possessively is something there would be records of, makes sense to cop to that first. Doesn't mean that's all there is.
Remember when things like this would happen with some buzzband like multiple times a week and we'd all debate whether it was really unforgivably toxic behavior or just regular but normalized toxic behavior? Those were the days, right? This is a weird one but I wouldn't be surprised if he's trying to get ahead of some more serious allegations. "In romantic relationships, I would get inappropriately possessive. When I realized a relationship was ending, I would text and call obsessively" - sounds like somebody who might be accused of stalking. I wouldn't be rushing in to write this off as "bad boyfriend behavior."
I don't think its a bad little bop but even by Grimes standards this is a LOT of hand-wavey-conceptual-BS to support a pretty standard-issue rave jam. If I hadn't read her description it would not have occurred to me that this was either AI or girl group related.
I think it would be a cute aesthetic for someone half his age
You know, Tom, there are a lot of thoughtfully clubby R&B tracks on... wait nvm you've heard it.
Way to go, Steve. Infinitely more insightful than the usual Gen X icon handwringing over cancel culture. Like there’s a nuanced understanding of the cultural and political context in which specific artistic statements were made right where’d you expect the undergrad nonsense about the sanctity of the artist!
Oh look who's in the Howse :) The only release like this that comes immediately to mind is Hayley Williams' solo stuff from last year and it didn't really gel for me until I could hear the whole thing. Then again that could just be the material. Maybe Beach House will be able to make it work better than she did. I agree it would be cool if each chapter had its own vibe. For me its: 1. Teen Dream 2. Bloom 3. 7 4. Depression Cherry 5. Devotion 6. TYLS 7. Beach House
Seems very similar to HOB Come see them in Boston and we can hang out
I don't get what everyone is whining about. This is fantastic. And I'm not a Mitski superfan or anything. It's just a great lil tune.
You should def be excited. I first saw them on Bloom and it was a good show but when I saw them on 7 they were rock stars.
Can you even imagine Nilüfer putting out a dud track? Hasn’t happened yet.
New Beach House in Feb would already make my day but new Beach House TOMORROW?!?
Wow he’s literally just standing there watching his fans die. What a fucking horrible person. He should never be allowed to play a concert again.
He’s the CEO of the fest, the headliner, and it happened during his set. He isn’t solely responsible for this, nobody is, but if you want to say which one individual person had the most opportunities to stop this from happening and the most influence over how it went down… yeah not sure who else you could come up with. Eight of his fans are dead and who knows how many will be permanently injured and traumatized, because he wanted a big fat pay day. I’d like to think he’ll be wracked with guilt for life but somehow I doubt it.
It's not even that the fans have to be crazy. Individually, people are doing shit that's kind of obnoxious - trying to push forward from the back of the crowd - but not something they know is going to get someone killed. They're far back from where the crowd is jam packed and by the time people start going under its too late, no one is in control of their own body. It's the same way that you get gridlocked traffic when a few thousand individual drivers make a few thousand small mistakes. Basically crowds this size are extremely dangerous. There has to be way better monitoring and way faster intervention, more checkpoints where they're limiting capacity. And ultimately the wisdom of having events on this scale needs to be rethought, though unfortunately the commercial incentives point in the opposite direction.
This is so sad and scary. People just trying to have a good time and getting fucking killed. Did they ever even cut off the performance?
You know Kanye has his own forum if y'all really need to indulge this pathetic fanboy shit
It makes a high debut on mine as well. I really enjoyed Lush but this album is just blowing me away.
In fact she is the Phoebe Bridgers of hyperpop boygenius
Same, Good Ones is kinda basic by Charli standards, this is eXCXactly what I want
