Alfred Soto always seems like he’s having a great time writing his reviews but you kind of have to squint for any direct commentary on the album. Anyway Pitchfork is just one website and Lucifer is getting some of the best reviews of Spoon’s career elsewhere/in the aggregate. There’s always some acclaimed albums that they damn with faint praise every year, it’s as much about their brand as it is about the music, so don’t stress on it. Your favorite band just put out another amazing album!
Well, you're in for a treat regardless - there's a big pile of great Beach House songs waiting for you on Friday.
Why compare a record to a movie at all? Serializing art/entertainment or releasing it as installments is not a new concept, and I think it makes sense for this album. Each chapter has its own vibe. And each has been a solid 20 minute slab of music, most of it is pretty dense, so the releases feel substantial. There's a clear intentionality to the release strategy, they aren't just spinning their wheels waiting for a single to take off. And personally I've loved having a new Beach House mini-album every month. It's not like the world has given us an abundance of things to look forward to this winter.
This is euphoric. I love that we're getting so many different flavors of Beach House on OTM. I can't remember the last time they did something so light and propulsive. It's like "Lazuli" with an MGMT-ish twist.
I wanted to like this but I agree that it fell flat. Medleys often don't work even when its just one artist running through hits, having six different performers taking tuns on this Frankensong just made it impossible for anyone to build to anything that resonated beyond the initial pleasure of recognizing the song. None of these artists are Prince or Beyonce level stage phenoms, but at the same time, none of them are exactly slouches, and I think given the chance to do his own show that Kendrick could deliver a stunning performance, heck, I'd even be curious what Mary J or Em could do with it. Definitely something better than this.
IMO you should start with Girls Can Tell and go forward but as long as you’re listening to Spoon you’re good
I missed that one last week so glad it made the Top 10, it’s perfect, obviously for the Elliott synchronicity but also just imagining padfoot making the perfect birthing playlist, I fucking love it Congrats dadfooot!!
Great song otherwise
NGL I don’t really like the children’s choir
Wild into My Babe is fucking stunning Earlier this week I wondered if Wild was TOO strong, would I even be able to give a front to back listen without hitting repeat? The solution to this problem is to follow with a song as good as My Babe
Galloping headfirst into the Roy Orbison comparisons, but if you've got the pipes for it then why the hell not?
Sort of to the point though, I don't feel like this EP really progresses these juxtapositions beyond the "haha what if we mashed up... jk... unless?" level, which would be more respectable if there weren't several fairly well-known artists who have already inhabited this aesthetic convincingly.
Moving forward you have to ignore any and all medical emergencies during a concert. Out of respect for Travis Scott.
From what I’ve seen fans are generally not feeling the songs - Charli has clapped back on that front once already - and the NFT stuff has gone over like a lead balloon. Also her gay stan Twitter army is totally unhinged so that just makes it all way more intense than it needs to be. Doesn’t seem to occur to these freaks that they can just listen to something else.
Boys on the Radio is a song that doesn't get talked about nearly enough
I can see that. Her voice has been one of my favs in the biz for a decade now, but very much in that ethereal Cocteau Twins plane of existence. She occasionally lets it rip in the studio but especially live her singing can be precise almost to a fault, like you kinda root for her to forget all the classical training and just go for it
The way she says “billy-YENs” really sends me Also “sexting sonnets under the tables” is such a great Carolinism
Has anyone managed to listen to "Wild" without looping it 2-4 times? Can it be done? The way it fades out when you want to hear that chorus one more time... its like you don't even have a choice.
