While The Photo Album and Transatlanticism are probably my top 2 DCFC albums (order varies by the time in my life I was most obsessed with either one), I have come to really love Narrow Stairs. Just love how a 5-minute song was released as the first single (honestly one of my favorite songs of theirs too!?). Not super stoked on Plans (although Different Names for the Same Thing is A+ DCFC) but I agree with this take!
I've been following this a bit, and apparently in the case of a suspension & changeover of conservator, all the documents that were privileged communication get sent over to the new conservator. That is, Zabel is potentially gonna get allllllllllll the emails between Jamie and his lawyers because the privilege is with the person in the role of conservator, not the individual themselves. Things are gonna get real spicy real soon!
I don't comment very often but I've read through most if not all of these comment threads :) I love this community, even as a passive participant. I learn so much & get so many great music recs. Thanks for all you do, SG!
Andy Samberg just crushes it in this movie. His monologue toward the end where he apologizes is just so, so good. This is one of my favorite bits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC0kTcAlf64
Third stage can be my cat begging for treats!
We can make our own dang Toronto festival! Or, shows are starting up again, right? Let's meet up in 2022 at the BNL Tour at the Budweiser Stage. Perfectly Canadian in every way.
Congrats! Those are awesome things to celebrate.
More pop maximalism! I miss music videos being giant events. The more the better!
Still arguably her best song and video ever.
Really off topic: I'm catching up on Drag Race All Stars, and I have a very important (non-spoiler) question. How do you have Charli XCX on your show and choose Boom Clap as the lip sync song?! Like I get that it's probably her most "mainstream" song but like, you could've done Famous at least? I would love something like Vroom Vroom to show up, how rad would that have been? Or even Gone! Christine & The Queens was on the Season 11 finale!!!
Yeah I think this is really fun! I like all the horns and guitars. Might be a bit of a smorgasbord of ideas but I appreciate the flair for the dramatic (and the campy nature of this video).
I love the title track from Hotel Paper. It's one of the first songs I played very badly on acoustic guitar! In general I think it's also a super strong album and I'm also bummed she didn't really go anywhere afterward. (I also do Everywhere at karaoke from time to time! It's a banger.)
This album was EVERYTHING TO ME (pun intended) when I was 13. It made me want to play guitar & made me feel seen, as a weird, doesn't-fit-in, "not like other girls" teenager. Her, Avril Lavigne, Missundaztood-era P!nk, and Vanessa Carlton were the beginnings of my branching out into other music that wasn't just Top 40 (even while stanning Backstreet Boys... some regrets). This whole album is great but "Something To Sleep To" is still my favorite.
I never super got into New Found Glory but I will still belt all the words to this song when it comes on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK5Sdj08Lco blink is certainly more prolific and honestly Travis Barker's drumming really makes this take hard to get behind. I think blink just has a certain charm that other bands at the time didn't have.
MCS Hive really out in full force after that pop punk article a few weeks back!
I am here to talk ALL ABOUT THE MATCHES ALL THE TIME. I absolutely love them. Their 10-year reunion shows were so, so good. I'm in the credits of the doc 'cause I donated to the Kickstarter! The moment it got to the point where they found out none of their songs had been registered and they were basically fucked over by their management was so heartbreaking.
You should watch their documentary! Some fascinating insights into their reunion in 2014 & how they got utterly screwed over by their management: https://www.bleeding-audio.com/
Aw yis a Commit This To Memory tour is super rad! They're playing in Indy where my parents live but not Toronto, maybe I'll make my parents happy and finally visit... Can I also just say how I love, love, LOVE the MCS love in this thread? It's really made my day. Thanks gummers
I almost always saw them in shows where they headlined which helped :) I saw their 3 Shows, 3 Nights in Chicago tour back innnn 09? as well where they played through their first 3 albums straight at Lincoln Hall. It was a rad time. They are also NICE DUDES! I never got to "talk" to Justin because he was constantly on vocal rest but they were always so giving and sweet. One of the benefits of not making it super huge I guess haha
I was just thinking about it the other day too!! It was the site that really defined some of my music tastes and was kind of my gateway to indie rock, as it inspired me to share mix tapes (well, CDs haha) with my classmates. In exchange I got Los Campesinos!, the National, DFA1979, the Dismemberment Plan... and so many more
I absolutely love Panic Stations. But it also came at a time when I really, really needed it. I trained for my half marathon with it on repeat and the songs are ingrained in my bones. This is probably in my Top 5 MCS songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzcUoe7Iy5g
YESSSSS! Tony's first gig back was the NYE show I was at and there was just a chanting of "TONY! TONY! TONY!" at one point. It was so heartwarming.
They are *so good* live. I have seen them... at least 10 times? And they never played a bad show!!
And of course, I would be remiss to not wax poetic about The Matches, who are genuinely great dudes along with being, in my opinion, one of the most underrated bands in this era. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERv4XZpfWE0
YES. This this this. It's just... fun? Rad? I posted this on a previous Meet Me @ The Altar post but I just love this is a thing again.
I cannot wait to read this in more depth but I just wanted to throw out Pure Volume as my way into the pop punk scene. It's how I was introduced to Motion City Soundtrack and then down the rabbit hole from there. They always seemed like a half step behind the other bands in the pop punk stratosphere which is a bummer, because they are great! They were my first show when I was 15 and also the last show I saw pre-pandemic when they reunited for NYE 2020 in Chicago. These songs were on repeat for the entirety of my teens, I swear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_nT6ojWzxo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY-c-_sZ8LI
A band I never got to see because I was was too straightedge to borrow my sister's ID to get into 21+ shows. One of my biggest regrets haha
I think I saw in a thread that you mentioned how wrong the take on "My Baby Wants A Baby" was in the PE, and you are indeed correct. An album highlight for me for sure! I do think the pacing is maybe a little off but I still love it. I already can't wait for her next one where she'll do something totally different. (Hoping for the arena rock 80s hair metal shredfest of my dreams)
Dang, I love this. The guitar effects are great.
I was hoping for that but at least not at my show :( https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/st-vincent/2018/sony-centre-for-the-performing-arts-toronto-on-canada-7beb066c.html I also definitely understand moving on from old material & such, but that album is just *stacked* with great St. Vincent songs. "All My Stars Aligned"! "Landmines"! "What Me Worry?"! The title track! Augh. It's so good.
Very relatable content! Also can't wait for her album; I thought it was out this week (time is a construct, etc.) and was wondering where the 'gum coverage was haha
When I saw her on the MASSEDUCTION tour I was bummed when she didn't play anything from "Marry Me," which might be a hot take that it's my favorite album of hers. It just sits in a place in my life when I was first really going to indie shows & I saw her open for The National, just her and a guitar, in a bar in England. Maybe like 200--300 people there? She was incredible and covered "Dig A Pony" and I was like SHE IS GONNA BE HUGE. (I know this reads like a massive humble brag but that is still one of my Top 5 Shows of All Time and I love remembering it!)
Oh dang, putting it on now, thanks for the reminder!
Every time I read "Steve Winwood" it just makes me miss Videogum. RIP, I miss you everyday!! Also that Sharon Van Etten & Angel Olsen track rocks. And it's so hot in Toronto right now and I'm getting Shot #1 on Monday. How's it goin', comment section?
This is amazing. And just very silly. He's such a solid dude.
Ms. Del Rio always saying what we're thinking.
Hi, TNOCS! Just popping in to say that this song was #1 on my day of birth (28 Jan) and what a great one! I have had that scene from Center Stage stuck in my head for the past couple weeks as well, so this was clearly destiny right? For me this is a solid 9/10 because that BASS LINE.
Her voice her was really incredible. She's always been great but her voice on "Pay Your Way In Pain" here is really amazing. Also that bass line on "Melting Of The Sun" is suuuper groovy. I do understand some of the aesthetic critiques but maybe the lockdown blues have me craving this overly-theatrical 70s cosplay situation. I enjoy the pop star-esque every-album-is-a-new-me approach she's taking.
I dig it! Really love the bridge. I'm really excited to hear this whole record in context. Pay Your Way In Pain is growing on me, but really nothing can stop me from being excited for this record.
I really do love Hot Ones. Kenan Thompson was just on (speaking of SNL) and he was such a sweet guest. It's been awesome watching Sean develop as an interviewer as well. Also shout out to Dua Lipa for being a top-tier Hot Ones guest. She did the whole thing wearing WHITE and totally crushed it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9qacGzTJXc
