so, instead of a top albums or songs list at the end of the year, some friends and I make album-length end of the year playlists. the 'rules', loosely, are that it must be songs that come out during the year and it must all fit on a burnable CD, no more than 76 minutes or so. additionally I create the mix in a end-of-High-Fidelity sort of way where the track selection and sequencing is considered, making more of a complete album experience. I also try to choose less obvious tracks and/or artists when there's a toss-up on what to include, but sometimes a hit is a hit.
