I recently found out there’s a definition of “indie pop” that is some of the worst goddamn trash I have ever heard.
#FerMe Camera Obscura will always be the standard for perfect indie pop.
You, me, and YBB. And we spend the entire hour trying to “figure out” why YBB is muted.
“Guys YBB is still muted and we can’t figure out why but he wanted me to tell all of y’all he loves Phish”
Finishing up Covid (triple vaxxed, was just like a shitty cold)
But it did give me a bunch of time to relax and check out the Callin Me Maybe thing. Chris and Tom are just the best. The whole episode was great and I really loved Tom’s commentary about being a “visitor” inside hardcore without being fully immersed in that life. That’s exactly how I feel about metal. Both are hysterically funny worlds that I’m simply too old and busy to complete submerge in. But being on the fringes and watching what the people that are really into it are digging is really great. Much love to all
Wow....what a great article! Having raised 7 kids that range from 34 to 15 I have thoughts on the state of pop music as well. The biggest change I see in music digestion between when I was a kid and now is a sense of history. This isn't said with an iota of judgement. Kids today (shakes fist) cycle through EVERYTHING at a rate that Olds like myself cannot fathom. They simply don't have the time or desire to go back and immerse themselves in ancient ass shit. The days of folks having encyclopedic knowledge of worthless data is gone. And maybe that's a good thing!
But for me the most interesting thing about modern pop sensibilities is what I'm going to call "Musical Appropriation" I'm mostly kidding. A young musician today can hear something from a Limp Bizkit or any other patently embarassing thing from the past and think "That riff owns". And then incoporate either it or something similar into their art. But due to the aforementioned lack of crate digging there's ZERO shame in it. They didn't live through what Nu Metal signifies. They don't care that it's seen by most discerning music fans as pure trash. They just know that riff does, in fact, OWN.
So the difference between today's young artist and every generation that came before is these kids will beg, borrow, and steal from ANYTHING from the past. I'm not here to debate whether that's good or bad. But comparing it to earlier generations that did the same feels like a red herring. The level to which it's going on now is unrivaled and I personally find it fascinating.
Much love and thanks again for the well presented article!
It took 8 years. 8 LONG years. But I'd like to think my constant belittling of mainstream pop music finally got to the esteemed Mr. DeVille and he's bowing out due to my haranguing. Truly a victory for Rockists everywhere. Viva La BadCo!

Just another example of what sets the esteemed Mr. Bieber apart from his contemporaries. Everything he does and everything he's involved with is so pure, honest, and most importantly, organic. Kudos.
Bless you YBB. Here's the thing with Harmony Hall. I f'ing hate it. But I only have the regular run o' the mill hate for it until exactly 3:40. And then that goddamn choogly ass guitar comes in and I want to stab my ears with a fucking ice pick.
