The song definitely sounds good; I've never been on the Antonoff hate train and he definitely knows how to produce some ear candy. Though on that note, there's a lot of similarity between this and "At the Holiday Party" from St. Vincent's album. Kind of reminds me of when Ryan Tedder did "Halo" with Beyonce and "Already Gone" with Kelly Clarkson back to back, though at least in this case St. Vincent's song wasn't a single so its a bit less conspicuous.
Not a number one is one thing, but this peaked in the 60s and isn't even in the top 100 anymore. That's pretty bad for a major pop artists hotly anticipated (and seasonally timed) comeback single. Even Green Light spent some time in the Top 40. Not that you should care if you like the song. But I don't find it all that compelling, and then like, objectively, its not a hit either.
Did anyone else see this and realize they hadn't thought about this song since the week it dropped? The discourse was fun while it lasted but I think we can call it... it's a flop.
Just remembering when Jackie dropped and I was like "is there any hope there's more where this came from" and RJ was like "actually yeah there is" and look at us now!
I’m not deeply into Laura Mvula but I remember her earlierish stuff being sort of Florence + the Machine-y whereas this new stuff is giving me more of a 80s Whitney Houston energy. Which is to say, yeah, it’s a banger.
Screaming or no screaming, I just don’t hear greatness at any point in that song. If someone played me “Gnashing” and told me I was hearing one of the great rock bands of the last decade I would not even know what to think. Whereas you can throw a dart at the last three albums and hit something that makes the case within a minute or two.
This is a reach, but "Cruel Summer" slaps and Annie gets a co-write on one of the year's biggest hits (which will probably make her more money than the entire Daddy's Home) so I guess good 4 her.
With respect, what exactly do you think I should be reading? I think I'm pretty well in the loop, though maybe I haven't drawn the same conclusions you have. We're talking, like you said, about public health and a group effort. But no individual has complete responsibility for that. Based off what I've read, once you get vaccinated, you've done the single most meaningful thing you can do to break the chain. I could never leave my house again, or I could just live my life fairly normally for now, but given that the vaccines work, I think I'd be contributing more or less the same amount of risk either way. Which is to say, close to none. I can't do anything about it if other people don't want to do their part to mitigate their own risk or the risk they pose to their communities. I want to be a good citizen, but I'm not trying to be a saint either. But I don't think that's a shitty attitude, its just being realistic about the scope of my power and my responsibility.
Yes, though it is drastically less likely, especially if people are outdoors, where we've already seen that transmission was negligible even pre-vaccination. And as far as people getting the virus goes, well, if they are vaccinated its extremely rare that they'd have serious complications. Literally >99% of the fatalities now are among unvaccinated people. I don't mean to be an ass, but I am kind of out of fucks to give about whether or not I inadvertently spread the virus to someone who chose not to get vaccinated, especially now that we are months past any meaningful supply shortage and literally anyone can drop into the corner store and get one.
Honestly, as much as I'm hating here, I've got more spins out of GMOC than I ever would have thought. It's, if nothing else, a solid song to launch a running playlist with... the right blend of relaxing and propulsive. So I'm not totally writing this off. But a whole record of this music from this band just seems like a Michael-Jordan-playing-baseball type of move.
This is it, beans. It's not just "scramz" vs "no scramz" thing, it's about what kind of journey you expect a Deafheaven song to take you on. Both this and GMOC just feel inert for large stretches in a way that no other Deafhaven music has. And for a band that is trying to do a melodic thing, the choruses feel especially limp. I was really hoping this song would be a better balance of old and new Deafheaven, but instead, its got me appreciating GMOC way more. I think people just needed some time to recalibrate expectations, because honestly this is not better than GMOC in any way that I can hear.
It could have been fine if she hadn't constantly interrupted the song to assure the crowd it would be over soon. I don't expect anyone to really do justice to Liz's part, but that was just disrespectful. If you think the crowd will be bored and you don't think you can sell the song well enough to overcome that, just don't play it.
It's probably the most important metal album besides Paranoid, which isn't to say its anywhere near the best, its just how it is. A big bloated stadium rock monstrosity. But one of the best of that genre. I just think its a mistake to judge it against the first four albums because the whole point was to make a Metallica record for people who didn't know or care what thrash metal or speed metal even were. And you can't deny it hit the mark, regardless of what you think about the nobility of the enterprise.
This is my favorite Gaga song and her 1001% commitment to the vocal is a big part of why. Poor Olly just does not have the range for this one. I don't believe he's at the Outer Periphery of Glory, let alone the Edge.
What I love about Lucy's writing is how she's so engaged with memory (Historian, Home Video) but there's no indulgence of nostalgia or sentimentality. At the same time, I think she's more pragmatic and tough-minded than her boygenius peers, and tends to avoid the sort of miserablism that Julien and Phoebe can both slide into. Even "Brando," which is my least favorite of these four singles, is just a feast of storytelling. Could not be more excited to hear the rest of this.
Yes! I'm really excited to hear it, especially after it got such a prime placement on Stereogum's Best So Far list. Singles definitely bode well for a level-up.
Pretty sure Solange was trying to work "Cloudbusting" into her sets at one point. But what I really want is like "Get Out of My House" or "Waking the Witch" (GUILTY!!!)
