thank you very much mt! the feeling is mutual. the essay is a key part of the book (which I’ve linked to below) so I dont want to put it out “in public” just yet. but happy to email it to anyone here, if you want to leave your address or message me privately on twitter or elsewhere! tiny.cc/electricwordlife
Prince and Miles were already acquainted by 1989! You can hear their one on-record collaboration in the Sign o the Times reissue bonus tracks.
“Though it’s distinct from past iterations in comics and movies, Prince’s conception of Batman is remarkably coherent: he’s a rich weirdo whose particular hang-ups manifest in a nocturnal double identity with black leather outfits. The Joker is basically the same guy minus any desire to hold onto a normal identity. The two aren’t enemies over anything moral or philosophical, it’s just that they both want to fuck Vicki Vale.” for my upcoming Prince book Electric Word Life, I wrote an essay about recovering from a traumatic car accident the same spring Prince died, and how Batman and its sohndtrack specifically rattled around my painkiller-addled mind. going against TNOCS form, I won’t post it here, but I’m happy to share the essay digitally with anyone interested.
a much more recent example is Beyonce’s trio of projects, Lemonade, Homecoming, and Black is King, and their many imitators
Between F**k Love and HBO’s Fboy Island and Kevin Can F**k Himself … when will corporations grow up and just say “fuck”?
really excited to see what kind of cinematic ideas are bouncing around Mike Dean’s head

and if you can catch the 3:57pm express and watch the Lolla crowd shrink in the distance like a zombie horde, even better
I also watched Treasure of Sierra Madre this week! Fantastic, definitely check out the other Bogie films you mentioned as well.
hey Beans I listened to a Deeper Understanding on the train from Chicago to South Bend as the sun set. I don’t love it, but I get it.
named after an excellent Mr Show sketch!
I just want to say When It Started is very cool if you play bass and dont know about file sharing and are 12 years old
the Sleeping Village show was fire, beans
got a favorite Atoms for Peace video/concert? I like Yorke's solo stuff in general but AFP the album always feels a little underwhelming when I give it another chance.
It's like the intro was written for me specifically. so good. I'm gonna check if the Prince versions of "Penetration" and "Jailbait" ever leaked just as soon as I can figure out how to google them safely.
Or "Only In Dreams!" (besides that last glorious bass note)
congrats! great work, looking forward to more.

this seems like a good week to make another effort at "getting" Lost in the Dream
the specificity of this joke! YBB should be proud
haha hard agree on Vince, hard disagree on Earl
Gum commenters are old ¯ \_(ツ)_/ ¯
I do indeed adore this album, shame they never got very big in the US. As evidenced by Lorde’s latest single, I think reviving the British acid/x dance-rock of the late 80s / early 90s is the next big wave for popular rock. Rock needs to be more danceable, and Mani and Reni played into some serious grooves on this one. Summer of Love #3 anyone?
oh buddy it is definitely just your dinosaur phone, I went thru this last year
hi folks I announced an big project this week, hope you get a chance to check it out. stay safe! http://tiny.cc/electricwordlife
you might like ARENA by Pixel Grip, which is like a queer industrial dance pop sound. also Jessie Ware reissued What’s Your Pleasure? with lots of solid bonus tracks, worth relistening for those.
I can't believe anyone would question the holy trinity of early 90s pop (Michael, Madonna, Trent)
gonna see some live music tonight y’all! Roy Kinsey’s mixtape release party DJed by Ca$h Era. Can’t wait.
very excited to dig into this, in particular the Mingus. I play (electric) bass so I need to get more familiar. my jazz listening has been mostly electric Miles now that I'm hip to The Heat Warps from a previous column. I'm seeing Chicago jazz group Cordoba play a patio show tonight because their album Specter is slick: https://cordoba.bandcamp.com/album/specter
