thank you very much mt! the feeling is mutual. the essay is a key part of the book (which I’ve linked to below) so I dont want to put it out “in public” just yet. but happy to email it to anyone here, if you want to leave your address or message me privately on twitter or elsewhere!

“Though it’s distinct from past iterations in comics and movies, Prince’s conception of Batman is remarkably coherent: he’s a rich weirdo whose particular hang-ups manifest in a nocturnal double identity with black leather outfits. The Joker is basically the same guy minus any desire to hold onto a normal identity. The two aren’t enemies over anything moral or philosophical, it’s just that they both want to fuck Vicki Vale.”
for my upcoming Prince book Electric Word Life, I wrote an essay about recovering from a traumatic car accident the same spring Prince died, and how Batman and its sohndtrack specifically rattled around my painkiller-addled mind. going against TNOCS form, I won’t post it here, but I’m happy to share the essay digitally with anyone interested.
got a favorite Atoms for Peace video/concert? I like Yorke's solo stuff in general but AFP the album always feels a little underwhelming when I give it another chance.
It's like the intro was written for me specifically. so good. I'm gonna check if the Prince versions of "Penetration" and "Jailbait" ever leaked just as soon as I can figure out how to google them safely.
I do indeed adore this album, shame they never got very big in the US. As evidenced by Lorde’s latest single, I think reviving the British acid/x dance-rock of the late 80s / early 90s is the next big wave for popular rock. Rock needs to be more danceable, and Mani and Reni played into some serious grooves on this one. Summer of Love #3 anyone?
you might like ARENA by Pixel Grip, which is like a queer industrial dance pop sound. also Jessie Ware reissued What’s Your Pleasure? with lots of solid bonus tracks, worth relistening for those.
very excited to dig into this, in particular the Mingus. I play (electric) bass so I need to get more familiar. my jazz listening has been mostly electric Miles now that I'm hip to The Heat Warps from a previous column. I'm seeing Chicago jazz group Cordoba play a patio show tonight because their album Specter is slick:
