This is awesome! I'm gonna back this because I love totally jerkin' books. I think reading then watching it may help with appreciating it for what it is, but it may be worth a watch-read-watch sandwich. I think repeat movies are best for this one because it's jam packed full of jokes.
I love this movie SO MUCH. It's got a killer cast, the music is amazing, and DUJOUR MEANS SEATBELTS!!! This is now on my weekend watch list, and listen list as well!
I'm 33 and I'm obsessed with this. It brings back great memories, gives me good feels, and makes me want to go to a show and scream along with the lyrics. You can appreciate good stuff at any age!
Wow this list is a solid 5/5. Feel like I've been missing a lot of new tunes this year and these all hit. Super excited to listen to that Miss Grit EP.
I highly recommend Kelly's book that was highlighted in a post this week; it's a sweet light read about loving your dog and I personally loved it. I've also been watching all kinds of British quiz shows, e.g. Big Fat Quiz Of The Year/Everything and Taskmaster's New Years Treat. They're just very ridiculous and low-stakes. Finally, cat pic: https://imgur.com/LHBW454 I hope you're feeling better, even while on meds I'm feeling this winter too. This week has been especially rough :\ hope you can carve out some time for self-care amidst all this.
EXACTLY. Here is a sample of some songs I've updated for my cat: (Important note, my cat's name is Xander but we call him Bubbub most of the time) * Dance Of The Hours (i.e., the hippo ballet song from Fantasia) and replace all the 4-note phrases with "Hello, Bubbub!" * Perdido (the jazz standard) where you just keep saying "the Bubbub" over and over again * Arcade Fire's Laika, where you just say "Xander" instead of "Alex" in the second verse * Any song about food * Don't Cha by the Pussycat Dolls, where I mostly say things like "Don't you wish your kitty was chonk like you" or something like that I could go on and I hope that this list made you smile on this weird Wednesday where all the things are happening! Much love to you, fellow commenters
YES so happy to see this! This was my first book of 2021 and it was a lovely read! I also sing songs with my cat's name in them (or various other songs where I just insert the word 'kitty' or 'cat' in random places) and this is highly relatable content. A+ would read this book again and have already recommended it to my friends with pets.
Does anything top "WAP" in terms of sheer outlandishness and knowing exactly what it is? I don't think so! But I also haven't seen as many videos this year and/or have forgotten about them :sigh:
Merry Christmas, gummers! I got Kelly Conaboy's book from the library the other day and am very excited to read it. Also where is Bookgum? My 2 favorite books of the year are The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and Know My Name by Chanel Miller. I read many excellent books this year, though!
That said, #1 is absolutely correct and I do love this list. Forgot about that amazing Julia Michaels song!
Justice for Kylie!!! She deserves a place on here. Disco is still on repeat for me; it's such a bright spot on this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzZn31gd_Jc
Can it be called "Break Free Jazz"? I'm here for it.
Ohhh I don't know this album, putting it on now!
Ariana's voice works so good here. This was the last thing I expected to watch today and yet also the most enjoyable!
It's straight bangers front to back!! This, Dua, and Jessie Ware have been some great throw-back disco-inspired albums for me this year.
My absentee ballot is in, I have the day off of work tomorrow, and while I'm full of existential dread, I'm going to be playing the shit out of DISCO on Friday no matter what.
That Bagel Bites tweet really had me going for a second. I was like "this seems like a normal tweet, what's the bi-- OH WHAT"
Can't forget this classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4KVfnotCjE
If Jake Gyllenhaal makes a cameo I might explode.
I know I should be excited about The Strokes, but John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch has some *great* songs. It was the highlight of my 2019 Christmas. I feel personally seen by this song in particular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxt0AEoANJk
Last night was indeed incredibly rad, and Xander had a fun time sleeping on camera for everyone. Had to drop off just before the AOTY discussion and can't wait to watch the rest of it today!
Oh nooo my comment was eaten by trying to include a heart in my comment! tl;dr your anonymous internet companions are here for you, I'm sending you a bunch of positive vibes, and wishing you the best in getting your referral! (insert heart emoji here I'm apparently bad at computers)
I'm excited about getting this Save Stereogum album, and even more excited to meet y'all on the internet (even as an only sometimes commenter)! The lineup looks rad. Speaking of things I've supported, the documentary about one of my favorite bands is starting to circulate at some digital festivals. If you like rad bands and discussions about how the music industry sucks, I'd recommend checking it out! https://www.documentary.org/project/bleeding-audio Next weekend I'm doing some office renos and am gonna catch up on albums. Looking forward to the Angel Olsen and Kelly Lee Owens albums as part of that adventure.
As both a lindy hopper and Andrew Bird fan, I learned this a few years back. But every time I am reminded of this fact, it BLOWS MY MIND.
Not gonna lie, I wasn't super into that Levitating remix but I listened to it again today & it's starting to grow on me! I'm super psyched for this either way; can't wait for that Hollaback Girl/Hallucinate mashup.
He was '07 but I definitely knew him! He lived in 01 IIRC. He _was_ terrible news! I didn't remember much about him, honestly, but it's not surprising.
I keep forgetting that you're the other IMSA alum here (although I'm '06 haha). They're not teaching Russian anymore, right? I think Paavo retired... some of my best memories from IMSA were the insane amount of hours my roommate put into her Russian assignments.
I also forgot to mention that Mark Ronson tweet is hilarious. Taylor should be a last-minute addition to the 00s cover album & do Apartment Story via You Belong With Me. Get on it, Stereogum!!
I've never really been able to get into Billie Eilish fully, but I'm very into My Future. What a nice surprise! Also, I don't know if this was posted anywhere on here, but Dua Lipa on hot ones was so great. Highly recommend a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9qacGzTJXc And she does it all WHILE WEARING WHITE.
This is exactly my take, and I... like it? I think! I'm pretty sure!
Unrelated to this post: my cat (in my profile pic) is named Xander! Related: I feel like I knew this band from my high school days, but it turns out it was a band called Over It, and high school Jeska was also very excited for a moment. It was back from my Purevolume days where I would just download anything I could get for free: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T_BgDAUPcE However, listening to this song, I'm gonna go back to being my high school stuff and enjoy this!
Honestly, Mandy remains the true champion here: https://twitter.com/TheMandyMoore/status/1280154369334194181 Fuck this guy.
That's awesome re: the compilation! My partner's in a band, and after a few successful online jamz (using Ninjam, which actually works pretty great!) things just seem to be on hold. He's been working on his own stuff, though, and it's nice to see he's still got that. And you should totally flex, it's awesome to have something actually mastered! :internet-high-fives:
Up here in Toronto, we're seeing a drop in cases & council still passed a by-law making masks mandatory in indoor public places. I think it's less political here and more people-are-exhausted-and-lazy, but I hope this keeps up. I'm originally from the states, though, and am super worried about my friends and family. One of my friends in Texas has a chronic virus-triggered illness from over 10 years ago and is terrified of leaving her house, even though she's missing tons of appointments that contribute to her not feeling like shit. She hates how everyone is acting so blasé about the whole thing and I don't blame her :(
Since donating, I figure I should stop lurkin' and start chatting! Loving the new Jessie Ware album, it's so sleek and cool. Also digging the new Khruangbin! I was excited for the addition of vocals & they did not disappoint. It sounds like summer road trips I wish I was taking right now. Laura Lee remains my bass inspiration & makes me feel like I should finally pick up my instrument and practice... Anyone finding it hard to pick up instruments right now? I've been lucky enough to keep working through COVID times but am not feeling super inspired to be creative.
I am a long-time-reader-slash-lurker-slash-infrequent commenter, and I could not be more thrilled to support SG. This blog is what keeps me in the loop for all kinds of music & I am super psyched to support the writers and the community! Very much looking forward to this album, as well, and secretly hope The National covered the Backstreet Boys. Fingers crossed.
Probably the second funniest Chaka Khan wrong answer of all time behind this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQdnqahSEX4
I recently made a 2006 pop punk/emo playlist and threw Helena on there immediately. It's an iconic opener!
