i was surprised to learn recently that it’s NOT courtney love on the cover of that hole album. am i dumb or do they look alike enough to be plausible?
came here to post the opposite about STO… lately i’m wondering why i thought it was so mediocre at first. there are a few songs on there that wouldn’t sound out of place on their classic records (apart from the too-slick production). there are some glaring missteps but a lot of really good stuff too!
yep, that song is an early favorite of mine!
i take it you didn't read the uproxx interview he did recently... definitely gone off the deep end
just because, here's ween doing "enter sandman" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd-RFUt0-NY
b-side from this era is one of my favorite shins songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXaGxQusgm8
such a classic. gave the reissue a spotify listen but was surprised not to hear any sonic difference -- the flake music reissue was like night and day. that said, the original _oh, inverted world_ is perfect. love that hazy alternate-universe beatles vibe.
it's actually kind of a neat experiment -- two songwriters taking the same verse and then completing the song separately. i wouldn't mind hearing more of this kind of thing in general.
i can easily see this happening for someone who has countless little sketches sitting around. you can revisit something years later and not remember the actually inspiration or writing/recording of it.
songs like this are why _oh, inverted world_ will always be my favorite shins. the melody/structure/flow of every track is just impeccable.
guided by voices - earth man blues
one of the tracks nominated for them to cover was "new noise" by refused, and i reeeeaallly wish it had gotten voted in.
agreed, but some clarification: the songs covered on the bonus flexi discs were nominated by retailers and voted on by fans. so the band didn’t choose them. ...presumably, however, they DID choose this hall & oats cover themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZfEVqM7FVk
absolutely!
i respect waters for never compromising with regard to his art. i think he has integrity, even if he comes off as an asshole. that gilmour continued "pink floyd" without his consent is pretty shitty, so this situation is a direct ramification. ultimately it's sad they don't get along -- they're both talented in their own ways, but together they made some incredible records.
well, you owned up to at least. still had moral obligation to downvote
the other guitarist matt took a leave of absence this album cycle after suffering some mental health issues. but the word is he'll be back soon. he is not on cavalcade as a performer, but he is a co-writer on handful of tracks (all the singles, i believe), which they were developing live in 2019.
something is seriously wrong with you, tom. what happened to you?
these guys did a great job, though. what a perfect song.
he did co-write all the singles released thus far, at least. hoping for his safe and happy return!
i always liked this resequence: http://stylusmagazine.com/articles/weekly_article/playing-god-with-rems-up.html
hell yeah, i was gonna say ISOLATION DRILLS too, once i counted. pollard has one the best 100th records too (counting solo and side-project stuff) with GBV's AUGUST BY CAKE. amazing.
big R.E.M. fan, didn't really like this album at first but it slowly grew on me over the last 20 years. initially, i thought it was pretty dire, even as a fan of Up. then i came around a bit and considered it a hit-and-miss record with some great songs and some bad ones. now i can listen to it all the way through without skipping. i'm not always in the mood for it, but i'm glad i came around to appreciate its weird beauty.
you were right, though: it WAS band.
i keep trying to make sense of their name but i can't
oh thank goodness, i was getting worried
yeah! and goat girl, idles, fontaines DC, black country new road, dry cleaning... amazing.
yep! it's nice to hear him bring a bit of that old magic to this tune.
mike mills on bass and backing vocals!
another kickass stray J solo on someone else’s record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOiw2hH7HaA
great interview with j! sidenote: noticed recently that stereogum hadn't updated in a while, so i cleared my browser cache and reloaded, and suddenly this and bunch of newer articles appeared. anyone else having cache issues with the site?
c’mon, tom, it’s a good song. rickrolls became a thing due to the video, not solely the song. the video is gloriously cheesy, coupled with the dissonance of seeing what the singer looks like.
nah, this song slaps and has always slapped.
