came here to post the opposite about STO… lately i’m wondering why i thought it was so mediocre at first. there are a few songs on there that wouldn’t sound out of place on their classic records (apart from the too-slick production). there are some glaring missteps but a lot of really good stuff too!
such a classic. gave the reissue a spotify listen but was surprised not to hear any sonic difference -- the flake music reissue was like night and day. that said, the original _oh, inverted world_ is perfect. love that hazy alternate-universe beatles vibe.
it's actually kind of a neat experiment -- two songwriters taking the same verse and then completing the song separately. i wouldn't mind hearing more of this kind of thing in general.
i can easily see this happening for someone who has countless little sketches sitting around. you can revisit something years later and not remember the actually inspiration or writing/recording of it.
agreed, but some clarification: the songs covered on the bonus flexi discs were nominated by retailers and voted on by fans. so the band didn’t choose them.
...presumably, however, they DID choose this hall & oats cover themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZfEVqM7FVk
i respect waters for never compromising with regard to his art. i think he has integrity, even if he comes off as an asshole. that gilmour continued "pink floyd" without his consent is pretty shitty, so this situation is a direct ramification. ultimately it's sad they don't get along -- they're both talented in their own ways, but together they made some incredible records.
the other guitarist matt took a leave of absence this album cycle after suffering some mental health issues. but the word is he'll be back soon. he is not on cavalcade as a performer, but he is a co-writer on handful of tracks (all the singles, i believe), which they were developing live in 2019.
hell yeah, i was gonna say ISOLATION DRILLS too, once i counted. pollard has one the best 100th records too (counting solo and side-project stuff) with GBV's AUGUST BY CAKE. amazing.
big R.E.M. fan, didn't really like this album at first but it slowly grew on me over the last 20 years. initially, i thought it was pretty dire, even as a fan of Up. then i came around a bit and considered it a hit-and-miss record with some great songs and some bad ones. now i can listen to it all the way through without skipping. i'm not always in the mood for it, but i'm glad i came around to appreciate its weird beauty.
great interview with j!
sidenote: noticed recently that stereogum hadn't updated in a while, so i cleared my browser cache and reloaded, and suddenly this and bunch of newer articles appeared. anyone else having cache issues with the site?
c’mon, tom, it’s a good song. rickrolls became a thing due to the video, not solely the song. the video is gloriously cheesy, coupled with the dissonance of seeing what the singer looks like.
