OK, I don't see an exploding eiffel tower so I'm not sure this is it, but this is still amazing: https://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/mp/uYOALbNHpsXl.jpg
I just wanted to ask Ryan if he has a picture of that gloriousness that he could share with us, but this. This would also be fun.
Whoooa, looks like the bigger tracks from this album already have 1 million - 5 million plays on Spotify. Is that all really from the last 12 hours or so, or has this been up a few days? If the former, I would imagine the likeliness of this charting well looks good.
Finally, an Aaliyah album that I can listen to on Spotify without thinking about that whole... R. Kelly... thing... Sigh, "Back and Forth" is an eternal fucking bop (and my one R. Kelly guilty pleasure), but I kind of miss the days when I didn't know that he produced that whole album.
(Also, FYI Sgum, the link you all have to the pre-order is actually the link to the "Androgyny" alternate mix.)
Hm, I think they're right about this album being a bit ahead of its time. I know it took me some time to come around to it, though I never quite fell in love with it as a whole like I did their first two albums. In an interesting twist, the deluxe CD reissue has a shit ton more tracks than the deluxe vinyl set...! Both have a B-sides album, but the CD set has the demos/alternate mixes/live versions (this Androgyny mix isn't even in the deluxe vinyl set) on that album as well, plus a third CD full of remixes. As someone who is eagerly awaiting the CD renaissance, this pleases me. (Though sorry to the people paying $40 more, for less music. At least you get more trinkets?) https://c.tenor.com/3GtGnTfvvYsAAAAC/twist-laganja-estranja.gif
This is some quality shade.
LOL, but also, how? Isn't it just making an S-shape with your hands while hopping around?
You know, we all clown on Grimes for getting with Musk, but yet...
I think you might have missed the point of what she was saying in the article though...? She was talking about a scenario where you're literally not able to see anything about a person's body, and how freeing she finds that (which is actually a pretty interesting angle to what I had written off as a dumb gimmick).
YEEEAH, was kind of wondering what the indie music parallel to GamerGate would even be. LanaGate, circa 2011 (or whenever LDR first popped on the scene)...? But still, doesn't seem *quite* the same...
24 going on 35 it would seem. ...which, actually, I kinda buy.
Funny enough, I just learned the other day that "Torn" is actually a cover. ...apparently I would have known this had I already read that related article about "Torn" covers that the site is suggesting, but I'm thinking I must have slipped into this alternate dimension after that was published. I guess it's good to have a signifier about when that happened!
I'd say don't say this to Chrystia Cabral of Spellling... but, actually, yes, please do.
Man! That single artwork. I was thinking this was an article for NOW! That's What I Call Music when I first spotted this post on the main page. Also, I am 98% sure that Akrylykz is the worst band name I have ever seen in my life, a fact that was driven home when I said it out loud and realized what they were going for. Yikes!
That... actually sounds like it could be really fun.
Was about to ask why you're bringing Kirin J Callinan into this, but he's not half-naked/urinating on himself, so I guess it's not him.
In terms of the music itself, I don't think the amount she gets covered in the music press has really changed since she and Musk became a thing? Like, even though Miss Anthropocene didn't seem to get quite the same level of attention once it actually came out, and I think didn't make as many year end lists, it seems to me like she's still largely considered top tier indie. I think the Elon stuff and people's exasperation with her didn't really help the somewhat more lukewarm reaction to Miss Anthropocene though, but I think the thing where the novelty wears off some a couple of albums into an artist's career also didn't help(and it's not like the last album pushed into new territory for her as much as Art Angels did). Plus, it's not like there wasn't still some massive eye-rolling from the general indie music-loving populace for a lot of things she said before she and Musk became a thing.
Gainesville! Yeesh, ok, you're talking about swallowing up most of the state then. Oh, don't worry, I am getting the hell out of here eventually. (I was planning on moving back up to Boston in the fall, but recently postponed it to early next year.) I just didn't want to get caught up in it, and would also like to spare my friends in the area. Also, ehhh, they're squeezing more and more people into this state all the time. They might as well just shove the 40-50 million people in the bottom half of the state, that would only really be accelerating the trend, and it's not like they would build up enough infrastructure either way anyways.
Wait, where in Florida would this line go? I'm in Central-ish Florida, so I'm requesting that it goes south of me. And I know we have at least 1 or 2 other commenters here in my area. (I still have some friends in Sarasota, so, let's aim for south of there?) But yeah, as an immunocompromised person, I would kind of love it if there were spaces here just for people who have proof of vaccination. Like, I went ahead and got vaccinated as soon as possible, but even still, there's just not enough research yet to tell what the efficacy is for people in my situation. So yeah, going "back to normal" isn't really a prudent option for me, not with what the vaccination rates and masking policies are in Florida.
Huh, apparently the Mezzanine beetle looks less cool and more goofy the more you zoom out on it.
That also would have been amazing. But still. https://miro.medium.com/max/1152/1*D3coJcXKUFD_pVYiWkRFsA.gif
HUH, there's a new MNDR album coming out? That's kind of crazy, it's been what, almost 10 years since her last one? Also, between the Dark Knights: Death Metal album and that graphic novel a few weeks back that had a soundtrack from Mitski, is this just becoming a thing now...? (Granted, maybe this is the next logical step from the writer/creative team putting a playlist in the back of the book...?)
Would you say it stays on your mind? It fulfills your...? You think about it all the... time? Time. Time. Time.
Well, I missed the BTS stan invasion, but at least I'm here for this moment in Stereogum history.
Oh shit, I forgot that the Claire George album is out. I enjoyed the singles from it. Thanks for the reminder!
And here I was, just about to get all #justiceForPyramidDong all up in SUD.
DAMN dansolo, that is a Breihan-level burn!
Cool, thanks! I know at one point the last one was supposed to be in May, but when I looked afterwards it sounded like they were maybe extending it? And of course I forgot to check it out this past Friday. https://media3.giphy.com/media/l0G18G3m69vQCOddm/giphy.gif
Kinda surprised that Noga Erez isn't getting more love--on the official list, and here in the comments. While I do think her first album might be a little better (I haven't listened to it in its entirety very much though), still, KIDS is a solid album--just banger after jam after banger. Also, it's kind of validating to see that I'm not the only one who's been having a hard time getting into the new releases this year. I figured some of it might have been due to a disproportionate amount of the good stuff getting released last year, but was thinking most of it was just me. It is what it is, but it's just funny, because it's been such a stark contrast to the crazy high levels of excitement I had last year about the new shit. So yeah, the new Noga Erez and Andy Stott albums have been the new releases I've been most interested in this year so far. I am looking forward to spending more time with the Black Midi and Hildegard albums though, and checking out new Martina Topley Bird and those sweet Jessie Ware deluxe edition tracks.
"Eisold and Lee sing about human connection as a kind of impossible miracle" As someone whose endeavors to get back into the dating world this year did not exactly go well, that description of human connection tracks. It tracks so hard.
I'm pretty sure that in more recent years there was at least one other EP that made it in--partially due to it being a slow release week--but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was. #helping
Wait, she doesn't already have a debut album out? I guess that self-titled release from a few years back is just considered a "mix tape" then? (Man, the modern usage of mix tape is kinda confusing at times...)
Also, does anyone know if Bandcamp Fridays are still a thing?
Oh sweet, guess I misread the BFL email from this morning and thought this was her solo livestream from last year. I remember really liking her rendition of "What's a Girl To Do" here, and her performance of "Close Encounters" was my introduction to this beauty, one of which I am a proud owner of now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEKJaHv_57Y
Hey, hey, to be fair, looks like 1/4 of this bill is actually made up of modern acts, just ones that are heavily indebted to some of the other bands on this bill. (Granted, not all of them sound like they were made in modern times ::cough cough Drab Majesty cough::, so I will give you that.)
And I've conflated Land of Talk and Oh Land forever. And then I find myself trying to remember if Land of Talk is also the name of that influential post-rockish album from that 80s synth pop band that took a more experimental turn later in the 80s, but no, apparently I'm just thinking of Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk.
Or also offer the additional material on a standalone CD or vinyl as well... I do wish more artists did this, though perhaps this would not be economically viable enough for the vast majority of artists. Personally, I loved this album enough to where I wouldn't be mad paying for it again, which I may do after hearing the remaining tracks. Though it definitely helps that I go for CDs over vinyl, so it's not as much of a financial hit, and that the bonus tracks are pretty stacked with unreleased material (and one hell of a previously released song), and not a series of remixes that there's a 10% chance I will care about.
The headline's not exactly accurate, since they rescheduled these dates literally a year ago (a fact I've been reminded of semi-frequently, since I've been seeing the rescheduled date in my city any time I go to Liz's or Garbage's artist page on Spotify... which has been leaving me wondering if I will still be in town or in the midst of moving when that date comes). ...but I guess now it's a bit more certain?
