Comments from Chris DeVille

You know what, I just remembered Michael saying "Harmony Hall" and "Jerusalem, New York, Berlin" were the best songs Ezra's ever written, so seeing as "Harmony Hall" was an advance single (and our #1 song of the week upon release!) I guess he would have voted for "Jerusalem, New York, Berlin"

Also I'm not sure which VW song it would have been! I would have voted for "Stranger" and James would have voted for "Sympathy" and Julia would have voted for "Rich Man" and I don't even know which one Michael would have voted for but you get the point.

We are erring on the side of not including tracks from new album drops when we've already heavily covered the release. Like, we easily could have picked VW and Big Thief songs to go here, but we've communicated our love for those albums extensively by now. Why not spread the love?

I dropped it in there days ago (I tend to fill in the lower sections of the column whenever I have a spare minute throughout the week) and tbh I don't even remember what it was. But I went ahead and swapped in Lizzo and Frank.

Low blow! I have expressed nothing but contempt for "ME!" and have converted both of my sub-kindergarten daughters in "Old Town Road" fans.

I haven't ever listened to Jamie T but I've seen a lot of British publications making that connection.

You’re right that Views does not fit on a normal 80-minute CD-R, but it is officially not a double album.

I wouldn't call the phenomenon I'm describing there "cancel culture," I'd call it the complete breakdown of good-faith communication across tribal lines. IMO a seemingly irreparable cultural divide is just as big a deal as the other stuff, partially because it fuels the other stuff. And the album gets into that with the "singers harmonize 'til they can't hear anything" bit and elsewhere, as explained further down in the piece. If anything, the sentence about school shootings is out of place because I don't hear Ezra really touching that here.

Because the album is about this stuff.

It is very difficult to imagine anything unseating this as AOTY for me. It's in that Golden Hour zone where my whole family mainlines it basically 24/7, where I keep finding new wrinkles all the time. As a fellow young dad who likes to think about Big Subjects it's meeting me right where I'm at. But man, the year is still young! How awesome would it be if something comes along that takes over my life in a similar way? To have a year generate two records that affect me that deeply?

Just swinging in to confess that there is nothing premature about this evaluation. I've had the album for weeks, have listened to it probably 50+ times, and have thought more about it than any other LP in recent memory. And right now it really is my favorite Vampire Weekend album, though I suspect it's going to be an OK Computer/Kid A situation with MVOTC and FOTB where I prefer a different one depending on the day. (And yes, I think these albums are on the same level as peak Radiohead.)

I saw him on the Rockin' The Suburbs tour right around my high school graduation and then a year or two later I actually drove from Columbus to Lexington to see him play solo at UK. He put on a great show both times. But yeah I def lost interest after Rockin' The Suburbs.
