Say what you will about who is responsible for what in terms the collaborative relationship that went on with Elton and Taupin...that is quite an impressive achievement.
I think you said it yourself in the sense that 'if it was any other genre you wouldn't give a shit.' If the gorgeous cohesion of these two extremely talented collaborators wasn't as great as it is, it'd be easier to just pass it off as Taupin holding marionette strings or Elton playing the muse. The songs they wrote giving the sense that John is merely pouring out fake emotions is off base merely because of how truly strong their songs were as a team. There a million successful singers out there that didn't write a lick of music yet we still hail them as talented musicians. What I think puts Taupin/John above most is the fact that they wrote a lot of really fucking good songs, and John was incredible at expressing each one in his own way and was the pinnacle of showmanship.
So we're now criticizing bands that have boring fan bases at shows? This for real? They're a fucking prog rock band! And not for nothing I saw them in '93 and was definitely not standing still during it.
In The Cage is a great pick although I'm not sure if I'd pick it over Dodo/Lurker if I'm grabbing off Three Sides Live...kind of a Sophie's Choice type dilemma.
I think Billy Idol get misrepresented but I'm not quite sure. He never lost hi coolness when I think a lot of times he could have and almost turn into a caricurture of himself. I grew up with him and I'll put the trio of Rebel Yell, Whiplash Smile and Charmed Life up against any 80's radio rock band run. Not a bad track on any of them
Sensitive? No. Fucked up? Yes.
Morrison is the farthest thing from underrated. The movie did nothing to any rep merely because it was more or less a carbon copy of No One Here Gets Out Alive. If anything it affected Kilmer. You want to really understand Jim, read Danny Sugarmans Wonderland Ave
Morrison ruled. He is the essential definition of Roac and Roll and never gave in right down to death. In the dictionary should be a picture of him in his three week old leathers next the the work Rock.
For the past many years I've continued to fear that this cannot go on forever. These guys cannot continue to do this. Someday, the pieces will begin to fall and the greatest rock and roll band will not be able to do it the same way, together. Today has just begun that made that real, and my Stones are now officially incomplete. Love to Mick, Kieth Ronnie, and especially Bill.
Its a lot of muted sound and passive aggressive fury signifying nothing. Predictable and slogs along making it tough to revisit. I do believe this though based on the last 2 minutes or so of Mombasa along with its abrupt end...they seem like the band that may be telling us don't worry we were just fuckin around with this album, we'll be back with a vengeance

He should wait and wait and wait until Donda gets released....and then the very next day release his album.

Whats the point really? So you can say, oh thats cool, he changed that around and added that, or took that out....so coooool! Please. All he's showcasing is his ADD.
Seriously, go do what normal people do, record an album and release it. Like I give a crap about how your rap song "evolved."
The real problem with him now is that he's deliberately become a caricature of himself. You used to listen to him and his beats were great and his lyrics were fun, jovial and interesting. Now, no one really gives a shit what he has to say because, well, its typically batshit crazy or so self absorbed that no human in their right mind can, or feels like they can associate with it, or even cares to do so. He made this mess by trying so hard to be bigger than his music, and it worked.
Any band that can release an album where so many people draw so many references to other bands/albums simply can't be ignored as not being something special, or even great. Or, *cringe* transcendent.
Who cares if you hear it at Target, really? Its just a song, not some proclamation of what you may deem cool or not.
And what are you doing in Target with your wife anyway?

I read alot about this maybe being a 'grower' and I can't even remotely see this growing more than deteriorating after listens. Its all schmaltz. Flowers comes off like a romance novelist trying to write like Jonathon Franzen.
