Fair write up to be honest. "Culdesac" did the same but so much better because it didn't feel forced. And, of course, everything that's followed has been varying levels of great.
"Skylight" deserved *so much more* but unfortunately came out amidst the scuttle - while it's not they're best song perhaps, "Amulet" is a mighty testament to how much the band can do with very little.
I seriously don't get this constant comparison between those two shows. Then again, maybe it's just bc "Dave" is largely forgettable (all love to the man who gave us "Pillow Talking").
Came here to say basically this. "Shiver" was bizarrely difficult considering how accessible even his most ambient and alien work has been in the past. This, however, is exactly the right sort of darkly stunning work I was hoping that record had been.
Also, the first Nat King Cole remix album is the only one that needs to exist. I mean, that bug fuck insane TV on the Radio remix of "Nature Boy"? Banger.
Few things make me more cynical about the stale state of modernity than hearing people try to recapture the whimsy of that damned hippopotamus song. It's never going to happen! Please stop!
Great review. Those years truly were the peak for the millennial's transition, for better or worse (mostly, worse). At least we had a phenomenal soundtrack.
Damn, I really quite like "Colortura" but I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised considering the other singles.
Gonna take this moment to say I still don't forgive them for putting "A Sky Full of Stars" on the otherwise truly effective "Ghost Stories."
The tides sure have turned against Ms. Bridgers in the gum comment section. I for one love that she changed up her cheap halloween costume stage get up!
New type of guy: guy who not only thought "Why Are You Ok" was Band of Horses best record but easily one of the best records of the last 5 years, period.
It's me. I'm that guy.
