After all the discourse, I’m surprised there are some actual songs in this. Feels so much more thought through than whatever the hell Jesus Is King was. There is a lot to wade through but there’s like 11 songs here I’d relisten to. I really agree with Tom’s point about the inclusion of the cancelled musicians. Kanye probably thinks that since he was “cancelled” for supporting Trump, then every other cancelled musician is as “innocent” as he is. Completely egoistical and in line with what we know. I won’t listen to Jail 2 but I think I sort of understand it.
Thank you for this! I'd personally cut Donda and Pure Souls too. They didn't do much for me. I agree with Ernest Heat, "24" and "No Child" would replace them for me. "Jesus Lord" really feels like a closing track to me. "Come to Life" has a finale feel too, but I don't dig the intro part as much.
Will we see another Pop Smoke album cover situation? One so lazy that outrage/memes will force a change?
He should have gone with the Louise Bourgeois drawing. Really looks like an Arca album cover. But as we've seen Kanye seemingly makes the wrong choice on everything.
Not to mention how streaming incentivizing these overlong albums.
Late to the party (on a family vacation with the baby) but finally able to dig in. Really liking this album! So many flourishes could only be the work of Trent & Atticus, and its so cool to hear that on a "pop" album. I think i'll listen to this twice instead of Donda (and still have time to listen to the first few tracks a 3rd time!)
That's what I'm thinking. Donda never gets released as a real album, but instead is a traveling show, where we maybe get some bootlegs out of it. But the in person experience IS the product.
That's very interesting the incidence rate is so low and shows how what numbers we show alter our perception. Based on the numbers provided, ~70% of the COVID cases were from people who got the vaccine. But that's just cause so many more people were vaccinated. It's almost the exact findings in Provincetown. I'd imagine similar ratio of people there were vaccinated, but the stats there forgot to mention how the incidence rates between vaxxed and non-vaxxed are so different . All of this to say, I'm very surprised (but happy) so many people were vaxxed and that must be why we haven't seen a superspreader situation from what could have been the mother of all superspreaders.
Even last year sometime the Italians Do It Better website still had a page for Dear Tommy. On the tracklist most were blank but it was there. Now, nothing.
Their debut is pretty solid. The opening tracks are some really good post-punk, unfortunately the rest of the album doesn't sustain that immediate high, but is still good nonetheless. I checked out from them after the other site annoyingly gave an album of theirs the score review of: u.2. But even that album has some decent songs.
Between this and the papyrus comment it's so funny to read someone be so pretentious and yet so wrong.
I really love the new Modest Mouse too. "Wooden Soldiers" is such a great song. Not everything on it works, but it's just great to hear new stuff from them.
I went to Penn State! So I'm very familiar with State College. I haven't been back in like 8 years, and can't really imagine it during COVID times. There are some very pretty scenery around there and even during non-COVID times could be extremely empty on the highway. But come fall and football season it's gonna be completely different on game day. Did her partner just start grad school or land a professor job? I can't imagine a reason to move there if it wasn't University related.
And then you have one called "Cable Dahmer Arena", which apparently is named for a car dealership and not inspiration for Tyler's early work.
Looks like he finally hired some PR people. I guess next we'll see him talking to Michael Strahan saying things like he's never sat down and thought about homophobia in hip hop or something like that.
Damn this does sound awesome! Any word on the producer, like is it OPN? Doesn't quite sound like his synths but who knows... Sounds more like Kavinsky to me though.
This sounds a bit more "normal pop" than the other little snippets. Surprised we haven't gotten a full single released yet, since it's only a month until the album drops. I'm guessing none of the songs are traditional "single" types and the label doesn't want Halsey-stans to write it off before they hear the whole thing. Although that would imply the label just gave her a blank check which seems a little bizarre to think about.
I really like Kurt Vile's version of "Run, Run, Run" but this doesn't do it more me. Totally agree with Tom's assessment, kinda need someone whoo's experienced the proper desperation to do it justice.
I kinda like the first 2 songs, but once the "crunchy" guitars come in it sounds pretty lame.
What are the Grizzly Bear guys up to now? I remember one of them (probably Ed Droste) saying they still kinda had to do day jobs even after their heyday.
To be truly canceled you have to either be someone who did really heinous things AND never really appeared on screen (ala Harvey Weinstein). Everyone else is just out there living their truth apparently
Good luck reaching that planet, it's over 500 light years away!
I saw them maybe 10 years back when they did the full Aja album in concert. Really fun show. I think I was the youngest person there, and my dad was maybe the 2nd youngest person there. But how's the lineup now that Becker's passed?
Black Country, New Road would be my pick. I'm very thankful that SG introduced them to me
What a great album! Was maybe the 2nd CD I ever bought. "Juxtapozed with U" is such a jam.
Hurricane? No Child Left Behind? Is Kanye turning the clock back to 2005? A newly reinvigorated W-era Kanye is what we need
I was going to suggest songkick. I think I have it hooked up with Spotify or last.fm or something but their emails to me mostly seem relevant. Can you edit the list of artists you get notified about?
Sounds like the sequel to the How to Destroy Angels album we've been waiting for. Halsey even kinda sounds like Mariqueen Maandig.
Cool stuff. And surprising to hear a song feature Panda Bear where he doesn't sing
The haunted house sketch really made me lose my shit.
I thought that sounded like him, it's a pretty fucking good song. Can we get more of this please?
Sleaford Mods get enough attention and praise from the quietus to last a music blog lifetime
Isn't Ms Springsteen's competition here like Steve Jobs' daughter and Bill Gates' daughter? By that metric she's like the poorest one ha.
damn you photo links! http://www.backstreets.com/Merchant2/graphics/cdWS.jpg
I guess we now know who might've been riding this horse https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Stars#/media/File:Bruce_Springsteen_-_Western_Stars.png
This is pretty fucking great. Looking forward to this album!
I just looked her up, Mary Laws also wrote “Neon Demon” (cool soundtrack, painfully slow movie) so between that and Levinson I guess we’re definitely getting a Refn style tv show. Anybody even watch Too Old to Die Young?
Tom is the "unofficial" 3rd host of one of my favorite podcasts, Hollywood Handbook, and it's a real treat whenever he's on. I guess I know what I'm reading later this summer.
fuck, why is this photo so big?
What if we get it confused with the other Paper Heart? https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81vgm4nRCXL._SL1500_.jpg
