I've been trying to think of all the great bands trying to turn hardcore into pop. Turnstile, The Armed, PUP, who else we got?
Oh man. This, Killers, and Boldy will be making this Friday truly excellent! I have high hopes for Wednesday to be the band I always wanted Speedy Ortiz to become but never did.
Damn, "Back to Oz" is quite a bop. One of Suf's catchiest since "Chicago?"
Fucking rad, I’m excited you picked this one. I haven’t studied theory in ages but I could tell it had some interesting things going. Keep this column!!!
Hilarious. I decamped to a coffee shop to work today because I'm feeling this exact same way about working from home lately. Thanks for the anthem, Stuck.
To add to that, this is the first song from these guys I've listened to since like, 2008. Maybe it'll perk up some extra ears. I mean, this song is pretty great.
“Hunnybee”?!
Yeah, I subscribed. I’m enough of a Tweedy fan, both his music and his writing, that it’s worth at least a couple months. It’s only been a week but so far it’s been worth it.
Agreed, and also agreed on the point at the end regarding albums that sound good versus event statements. I prefer the former 95% of the time.
Isaiah Rashad - "Wat U Sed" So smooth. That 808 cowbell.
I’ll always remember this dude for “Girls@.” One of the best summer jams of the 10s.
I feel exactly the same way re: Torres. She was absolutely the right pick for AOTW.
Honestly I don’t even care how it turns out. The Big Move is what impresses me.
These new Low tracks have finally pushed me over the edge into a deep dive in their discography. It’s been extremely rewarding. That’s all, bye!
I never thought they would go so prog!
Shit. That’s a good chord progression.
If I was picking from the shortlist it would absolutely be Dry Cleaning's New Long Leg. That band is my favorite discovery of the year.
I think this one takes the edge for me too, but choosing between it and Promises, Fir Wave, and Untitled (Rise) would still be extremely difficult!
Thank you for helping me add “you no-chin-or-soul-having dickweed” to my repertoire
I am eating up anything featuring Immanuel Wilkins. Dude is a monster. Lately I’ve been into bassist Harish Raghavan’s 2019 album Calls For Action that has him on it, as well as Joel Ross on vibes. Killer stuff. I can’t wait for this Orrin Evans release.
Never heard of her before but this is rad. The Cate Le Bon comparison was enough to reel me in.
I revisited Everyday Life recently and I fully agree with you. It has tons of little album-track gems like my favorite, “Eko.” That album’s proof enough for me that they can still do stuff I like, and makes me feel better about mostly skipping shit like this one.
Yeah I love this. Won’t be coming back to it much as a single, but I can’t wait to see how it flows with the album.
So pumped. I didn’t prioritize shows enough pre-COVID. This fall I’m going to (in order of excitement) Jukebox the Ghost (always go see them with my wife, great piano power pop) Wilco (my favorite band of all time but I’ve seen them before) Dry Cleaning Tame Impala (first time. Expensive but it’s also my first time at the Gorge so it’ll be worth it)
The more exciting Janelle Monáe news is that she’s writing a book of short stories set in the Dirty Computer universe. Yes please!!!
Extremely fucked up. I can’t believe anybody thought this was an appropriate idea.
Oh sweet, Angelique Kidjo! I've been listening the shit out of her Remain In Light cover album, having just discovered it earlier this year. Highly recommend.
Wow, this might be Droog's best album... And that's saying a lot.
I'm too obsessed with that fresh London rock scene, so my top three are literally Dry Cleaning Black Midi Black Country, New Road Shout out to Promises, Sound Ancestors, and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, coming up right after those three. However, this year I've listened to way more 70s rock than anything modern, so my other favorite albums of the year are Talking Heads' Fear of Music, Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic, and a rotating list of Sparks records.
I just want to rave about this band. I've always known I'd love them but never took the time to fully dive in until Year of the Horse (AOTY) released in full. Since then, I've been all over their discography. Shout out Chemistry of Common Life and Year of the Tiger. Anyway, these guys not only make life simply worth living, they make me want to live the shit out of it. I'm trying to prep my wife to listen to them too, she's not into growly scream stuff, but she's always associated that style with aggression and negativity and that is just not the way Fucked Up function. Absolutely cannot wait to go see them for the first time next year.
Yes! This album kills. Old-school indie rock stompers. My favorite track is "Stroke My Ego."
They're ripping off the brockhamptons look!
They really should've waited until Monday's Black Market column to put together the tracklist for this "Death Metal" soundtrack. I got sooooo many new records to check out from that post.
I read both Tweedy's books this year and now I'm listening to more Wilco than I ever have before. Highly recommend the experience.
Geoff Rickley looks almost identical to when I got into Thursday in 2003.
